INTERVIEW: Alexis Keegan

Hi Alexis, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! Thanks so much for chatting with me, I have been awesome!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Gospel”?

Gospel is a high energy, sassy, and attitude filled fun song! It’s basically telling someone to shape up or ship out – that they have to change their attitude or they will be kicked to the curb. I feel like we have all been there at one time or another haha

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

This is actually the first song I have put out that I did not write! I usually write or co-write all my material. The producer Andrew Williams and I invited a good friend of mine, Dom Williams, to come co-write a few songs with us. Dom came in one day with Gospel and blew us away! Dom was like “So I wrote this song – I don’t know if this is something you guys would vibe with but take a listen and no worries if it’s not your style”. Andrew and I listened and were like “YES!!” It was almost like all stars aligned-I was ready to move on from the heart break I was writing about and Dom had this song that I feel like I have been craving for my whole life. It was the first time I felt okay with recording a song I did not write, because I felt like it was THAT GOOD!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Funny you mention that, I actually just shot one two weeks ago J Final edits are being done right now and it should be out in the next few weeks. Can’t wait for everyone to see it!

How was the recording and writing process?

The whole process of Gospel was so much fun. It was almost like Andrew, Dom and I had to snap out of the laughing and amount of fun we were having to get work done haha. They also challenge me in such an awesome way. They know my potential more than I do and pull things out of me I didn’t know I could do. I love those guys and am grateful to have them in my corner!!!

What role does NJ play in your writing?

For a long time I was writing so many songs based on relationships that I had in NJ. Even after moving to Los Angeles, I was channeling that love and heartbreak for years! I can listen back to those songs and it will still take me back to where I was in NJ feeling that way.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

I feel like the starting approach is always the same because I really do primarily write and enjoy singing songs that come from my personal experience. I try to collaborate with people that I have a certain comfort level with, so I can give them the real dirt about how I am feeling or tell them about a situation I have been through and we can go from there. When I first moved to Los Angeles I was really really heartbroken over a recent break up. Being in the studio with Andrew Williams was almost like a therapy session every time haha. There were some tears, advice from Andrew and after writing and recording a song it felt like such a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yup!! I just finished recording a new EP!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The title is “Honey Child”. It’s a name my dad used to call me when I was little and it just felt right to name the EP that as a tribute. I am looking to release the whole thing at the beginning of 2019!

Any plans to hit the road?

That is definitely on the list to go along with the release of “Honey Child” next year J

What else is happening next in Alexis Keegan’s world?

A lot of my extra time is spent with my dog, George! He is a puggle that I adopted 5.5 years ago from Wags and Walks, which is a Los Angeles based dog rescue. George actually made an appearance in a recent photo shoot I did. Here are some pics <3
