Can you talk to us more about your song “Easier Sung”?
“Easier Sung” is the 5th track on my album Bruised which released last month via Punch Bug Records. “Easier Sung” is the ultimate break-up power ballad.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I was in a very toxic relationship. The guy I was in love with cheated and was lying to me. I was hurt and in love at the same time. It was very painful and confusing. Writing “Easier Sung” helped me understand my own emotions.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I’d love to film more music videos. I have thousands of ideas!
The single comes off your new album Bruised – what’s the story behind the title?
Every song on Bruised was written when I was in a very dark place. Shades of purple, black, and blue. I felt very hurt and betrayed by my x lover, some so-called friends, and just life itself. I was damaged, but not bad enough where I couldn’t function. The concept behind Bruised is being in pain but not broken.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing the album was therapeutic. I could feel myself shedding who I used to be and was growing on a personal and artistic level from songwriting. This project took years to record. My partner, Jake Fineman, and I built our own recording studio in our tiny Hudson Valley cottage. It took a while for us to get completely set up. Once we started though, it was a blast to produce.
What role does NYC play in your music?
On track 6 “New Face” I explore the idea of moving to NYC. Writing the song made me realize it might not be the best situation for me. My mental health needs nature and peace. I love visiting NYC but I love coming home to the quietness.
What aspect of tragedy and loss did you get to explore on this record?
I honestly lost sight of who I was. My art consumed me in a way that I lost touch with reality for a bit. I spend all my “free time” working on music. It might not be a tragedy necessarily but I found that spending all my time to work on my art played an effect in losing certain friends.
Any plans to hit the road?
I wish. Someday!
What else is happening next in Nica’s world?
Always writing/recording new songs! There are a couple collaborations in the works with some insanely talented artists 😉 I also play synth/sing in an indie alt rock band Jellyfish Tango! We have some gigs lined up and a self-titled record on the way.
