SINGLE REVIEW: Turn This Love Around by Michael Burrows

It’s no wonder Michael Burrows’ latest single Turn This Love Around is attracting a lot of social media attention and getting a heap of support at radio; it’s a strong melodic tune with a lyric that Ed Sheeran would be keen to have in his songbook. And if the chart positions are anything to go by, audiences seem to love it also. And why not, there’s a lot to like. The style is immediately identifiable yet comfortingly familiar; we know where we are. The instrumentation maybe country-tinged rock but there’s an alternative streak running through it also, perhaps as a result of the vulnerability in Burrows’ voice, a certain frailty that comes through via the gentle, end strains of his vocal performance. There’s a confidence but it’s underpinned by a melancholic lilt that makes a perfect accompaniment to the suitably tentatively sorrowful lyric. ‘Love is far from dead,’ Burrows’ sings during one of the chorus’ highlights. The depth of his conviction is certainly clear, made all the more affirming by the lullaby-like rhythms and rolling acoustic guitars. It is a welcome change to hear a song which wears its pop structure and melodic intonations on its sleeve yet imbued with all the muted colour and nuances of other styles – folk, country, rock – to create a fresh-sounding blend despite the long histories of those particular traditions. A few other descriptions come to mind when attempting to pinpoint the many treats of this well-crafted song; sincere, relaxed, soothing, to name just a few. Turn This Love Around comes off the back of an earlier release, Please Don’t Cry, which made some strong inroads into the alt-country set. This previous song was a signpost song which proved to be a great starting point for Burrows’ following game-changing release Turn This Love Around, the success of which I’m sure, will be replicated many more times in the future.
