INTERVIEW: Kelly Padrick

Hi Kelly, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello VENTS!  I’ve been well thanks – trying to stay busy!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Heavenly Ride”?

“Heavenly Ride” is an upbeat, some say B’52s inspired type of song, and when I wrote it nowhere in my mind was I thinking ’65 Ford Mustangs! which is what the song came to be about in the video. The song itself is about love and being happy.  “Heavenly Ride” always felt very California to me so I’m really happy we got to film it there.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes – my agent!  He wanted a happy song from me because I write too many sad ones – so he got his wish 🙂

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Shooting in California is always challenging in terms of expense, permits, etc. and we were very lucky we were able to film there with very little drama.  The white mustang actually broke down, and we incorporate that into the video – Dario, my co-star, and my – our reactions are what you see when the car just starts going up in smoke!  Thankfully a studio in Hollywood lent us the red mustang and we had a very happy ending.

How was the recording and writing process?

Oh, recording and writing are my two favorite things in life.  I wrote the song walking down my street, East 87th , in NYC.  It just came to me.  I finished writing it when I came home, emailed  Nancy Hess, my producer in Portland, Oregon, hopped on a plane and we recorded the song.  “Heavenly Ride” is actually from the ‘Dear Love’ cd so we recorded nine songs in total.

What role does NYC play in your writing?

NYC is great!  It represents freedom for me.  Wherever you go, there is creativity.  Artists.  Living here reminds me why I came here in the first place: to express myself in my writing.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

I have a new EP called ‘Fires’ that came out a couple of months ago (‘Fires’ can be heard on the Kelly Padrick radio station on Pandora).

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I have a new video coming out called ‘Waiting for This’ that was filmed last month in Montreal.  ‘Waiting for This’ is from the new Fires EP.  The video should hopefully be out later this year.

Any plans to hit the road?

I hope so!  Once dates are confirmed I will definitely be posting on Instagram, Twitter and my website.

What else is happening next in Kelly Padrick’s world?

I’m happy to report there is a “Heavenly Ride” video screening Wednesday, September 12th at 7:30 pm at Cheers Terrace in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.   Should be a fun event!  Come out if you can!
