Jim Junior’s first single is fun and playful on the surface, however there’s a juxtaposition to explore within his lyrics. “I think I loved the irony of an upbeat, happy piece with a dark lyric about addiction. There’s a contradiction there, but I’m challenging myself with it too, by asking if the ways we choose to live and enjoy ourselves are so “black and white”, and whether one type of behaviour is inherently better or worse than another.”

“Other tunes are lyrically in a similar vein and I guess from the music I was writing at this time this is sticking out as a sort of study. It’s all about compulsion, for better or for worse. There’s sometimes an irony living in lyrics, and I think both of these other tunes have an element of that. There’s an inevitability that the me in the song is struggling with but also embracing; that he can’t really change aspects of himself even if he wants to, but maybe that’s okay as long as its dealt with honestly.

As a Toronto resident, he spent many years hosting illegal parties, vocaling his own music during his DJ sets which saw people coming back and asking for more at the next party. Those DJ sets quickly became gigs with only original content. Before all this he studied contemporary jazz at college where his influences grew. As his two musical experiences collided, it’s clear to see the uniqueness the singer-songwriter-producer had at his disposal on The Dark Side. Expect collaborations with Lxury & Kindness soon, along with others, but more than anything, expect top quality Jim Junior grooves.
