INTERVIEW: Carys Calling

Hi Carys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Evening! Thank you very much, it’s a pleasure to be interviewed. I’ve been really good thank you, Currently in the middle of moving from Bath to Bristol, so that is keeping me busy 🙂 So excited to release this new song!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Honest”?

Of course; Honest is a song I originally wrote a few years ago. It been reimagined with my incredible producer Tom Cory, I’m really proud of what it’s become.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I suppose it did actually. It’s inspired by a relationship that faded quickly; the late night chats blurred into silence. We kept our habits between the sheets for a bit but inevitably the sparks burned out. It’s tricky, i found myself clinging onto something that made me feel empty and the most alive at the same time. I think people can relate to it…

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Absolutely yes!! It will be released around the end of September. Later than I hoped but better late than never!

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote the song when I lived alone in Newcastle a few years ago, it just came pouring out of me. I don’t play an instrument so I wrote the lyrics and recorded the voice memo on my phone in a few minutes on a super rainy day in November. I never released the song and I always hoped to. I moved to Bath and now two years later, here I am with a reimagined version of it. It was amazing to reimagine it years later now I’m out of the situation. The recording process was magic. Tom brings to life my vision with everything I want and more. It’s haunting, witchy and raw. I’ve never worked with a producer so easily before, he’s so f**king talented, I just sit there in awe of what he creates.

What role does Newcastle play in your writing?

I have SO much love for Newcastle, I studied there for 3 years, it’s been the home for a lot the songs I’ve written. I was kinda lonely when I lived there. I had insomnia and sleep paralysis, so that might taint it a little, but with that comes some raw lyrics. It’s where I wrote Honest. The city is stunning, and full of some of my favourite people. I grew up in the countryside near Newcastle, then lived in the city and on the coast. It was a colourful three years. Newcastle has shaped my writing in many ways. Like a lot of writers, writing was my escape growing up. I actually went back to Newcastle last week to see my family/friends, there’s nothing I love more than going back up North, it’s in my bones. I’m addicted to new places and people, but I always revisit the places that shaped me.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Definitely! I have a few songs in the pipeline, I’m so buzzing to release more music.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

There will be a song called “Friday Night Out” coming in Winter 2018!

Any plans to hit the road?

Once I’ve moved to Bristol, I’ll be lining up some gigs. So far I’ve done acoustic gigs in Bath, which I LOVE playing, but I can’t wait to get started with a full band. I’ll be updating my website with upcoming dates!

What else is happening next in Carys Calling’s world?

New songs, new videos, live gigs, and settling in in Bristol, I can’t wait to be back on stage doing what I love most. Thank you so much for chatting, it’s been such a pleasure 🙂
