INTERVIEW: Scottish Indie Pop November Lights

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great thanks. Feels great to be back with new music. Thanks for having us.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pray”?

Yeh, so it’s a song that we wrote last year with the writing duo The Nocturns. We have written so many songs in the past year but this one felt like it displayed everyone in the band’s individual talents collectively. That’s why we chose it to be the first song to release after a year absence. The meaning behind the song is about trying to escape from a terrible and dark situation whilst trying to find the positive when everything surrounding you seems so negative.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Personally I went through a stage of losing friends and being, to an extent, lonely. I tried to fight the feeling off but it never seemed like it was ever going to get better. It change me as a person and I started treating the ones closest to me with no respect. When the day eventually came where I felt optimistic about the future and wanted to play and release music again it was only a matter of time before a song came off the back of that exact experience.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, so we shot the video for it in St. Andrews and it’s coming out really soon. It was such a beautiful day and just created the perfect environment for the video. It follows a love storyline but it’s based on the idea of clinging onto the only thing you have left even though your mental state as forced everyone away from you.

How was the recording and writing process?

We recorded PRAY in London. We love London and have been lucky enough to play a few shows there. It came out of two days sitting in a triangle and looping over an idea we had. The idea was the opening chords on the piano. We were approaching a dead end but as the day went on eventually something great happened…the bridge. It changed the game and allowed us to write the best possible song around it. The song wrote itself after that.

What role does Scotland play in your writing?

I think Scotland will always play a major role in everything we do, not just writing. It’s my favourite place on the planet and if we’re lucky enough to travel the world I’m sure it’ll still be up there at number 1. We are planning to do a writing trip in a cottage on the borders at some point. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m sure we were voted the most beautiful country in the world recently. If so, I wouldn’t be surprised.

As you keep finding much success – does that put any pressure on you as you release a new material or rather the opposite?

Well our last release ‘Talk’ was such a success for us and we released a remix with a talented producer Imad on Souve Records and the streams for both on Spotify are mad compared to what we used to get prior to that. We knew this next release was important but it wasn’t so much pressure to be more successful. It was mainly just putting pressure on ourselves to create something that was better than the last. In our mind what we have coming up including PRAY, is the best music we’ve ever made. I can’t wait for everyone to hear whats next… and then next after that.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I use personal experience mainly but recently I’ve found that writing about someone else’s story can be really productive. One of our newer songs that we are planing to release has nothing to do with me but because it’s based on someone close to me’s story it still feels personal to me when I’m singing it. Write about anything is usually my advice to myself when I’m struggling to find inspiration.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes very soon. New music means new tour and we cant wait to play the new music to everyone.

What else is happening next in November Lights’ world?

More new music is the main thing. We have a few cool projects coming up soon and some live videos all on their way. I wrote a song last year that I love and have since wanted to release. I’m so excited for that one to come out and it looks like that will be before the end of the year. Keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for a Tour announcement very soon and new music in the very near future.
