INTERVIEW: Toronto Rapper Mazzi 500

Hi Mazzi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m iight. Thanks for having me!

Can you talk to us more about your single “Girls Like”?

Girls like is one of my favorite songs I’ve made thus far. It is mixed with a sick hook and a catchy subliminal. This track is a titan. One that most people can’t deny.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I was simply attempting to make a song with that tone. Other than that I’m simply speaking of experiences and tryna help homies know what women like.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The planning was hell and I’m difficult to deal with at times forsure. But, my squad held it down. We got the job done and had a great time doing it. Still mad I didn’t get to try none of that chicken though…

The single comes off your new album The Seizure – what’s the story behind the title?

I chose the head of Julius Caesar and called it “the Seizure” because I am fascinated by Roman mythology and I feel like it’s represents to a degree of what I’m talking about a time of war, pirates ppl in poverty fighting to prosper by any means. A time where ppl were ruthless, relentless, uncaring and unflinching when it came to their greed. While the luxurious side of everything seems lavish and beautiful in the Roman mythology. Sex was desensitized, war was for expansion and to modernize, fighting was for enjoyment and entertainment . I feel like this is our modern day North America. And I feel like I am a victim and survivor of my community and lifestyle and while the society is rotten and cold blooded I strive to be at the top of it. Hence “the seizure” I am seizing the game like Julius Caesar himself.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording and writing process was a blessing. That boy Zepfire (producer of The Seizure) is a beast no joke. We stumbled upon so many tracks. Some were right place right time and it trips me out because other than the track “LAST WORDS,” these songs were all by luck no joke.

What role does Toronto play in your music?

Toronto is everything to my craft. Without it, I wouldn’t have what I have, I wouldn’t know what I know, or even write how I write. There was summers I use to blast “camo” in the whip “Sam G” I got my swag from here and I was born here so blame it on the 6.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

The inspiration came from hunger. It came from me having a point to prove. It came from me wanting to be different lyrically. I always attempt to say the unsaid. And after that you have to talk your experiences.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m working on something special, but I want the people to want me. I don’t wanna force myself on my future fans. I want them to call for me, then I’ll come.

What else is happening next in Mazzi 500’s world?

Mazzi 500 is gonna keep pushing. My main hitter the man I made “Molotov Gang” with is out jail and ready to go, so I’m gonna be helping my gang come up while I’m on the rise my damn self. I got fire for days and we make it in an instant. Nothing will change other than the commas and decimals!
