Very good, thanks for having us. Right now we’re spending our time with vocalists in studios to write the upcoming singles. We want to do more song oriented singles, since we released so much DJ music before and ‘Plang’ is one of the first hybrid songs.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Plang”?
We started by recording the percussion sounds. Johannes was a drummer before so he can play quite tight and I accompanied it loosely with a little more distance to the microphone. This is how we got the unique rhythm. Later we met singer Ka through our common friend Marten Hørger and he immediately wanted to jump on the track.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The connection with Ka started on one of Martens famous BBQs so maybe this was one of the inspirations for the song too. Also the song in general has a massive dancehall vibe and Ka got his roots there. This was a huge influence too.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We’re currently working on an animation for it and we hope to finish it within the next weeks. Can’t say too much at this point.
What role does German play in your writing?
Not that much really. German music culture is quite different, but we’re heavily influenced by rap music which also plays a big part in Germany. But there is only a hand of people doing similar music here.
Known for playing with different genres – how do you balance them together?
Normally we just do what we feel and the sound design and vibe makes it Donkong. Still we noticed that it’s a little hard for listeners if we switch genres too often. Therefore we recently decided to stick to certain tempi and the upcoming songs will be more into one direction.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
Making music together is always a compromise. Johannes and me are very close in our taste and that is why it’s so easy to work together. With others you often have to step back from your vision a bit to find something everyone is happy with.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, we’re constantly working on new music. And there is definitely coming more soon. We also regularly have snippets in our Insta story. So take a peak there, if you want to dig deeper.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
We will release a song with London Nebel called “Mischief” next month and we just finished a song called “Bounce” we would love to release soon. A lot of our unreleased material is part of our “Identity” Mix on SoundCloud.
Any plans to hit the road?
We have some upcoming gigs here in Germany, but would love to play more internationally.
What else is happening next in Donkong’s world?
There is something going on and it’s part of our upcoming music, which we can not talk about right now but hopefully very very soon. So stay tuned for big news.
