Hi Sebastian, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Great, just enjoying what’s left of summer! Thanks so much for having me.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “House of Cards”?
“House of Cards” is a song about knowing that fire is hot but you touch it anyway, over and over again. It represents some toxic relationships or friendships that we have where we try to walk away several times but somehow always end up walking right back in because the other person has this emotional control over us. It’s a self-aware song about being played.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
A series of events, I’d say. I was very much like a “house of cards” growing up, but I’ve gotten a lot better over time at identifying potentially toxic relationships and friendships and ending them before they escalate.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
There’s going to be at least a visualizer and/or a lyric video, but a music video is up in the air. I would love to make one, though! I had a really fun time making the music video for Bulls and Bears, so I would love to lead a production for this new song as well.
How was the recording and writing process?
I was on the road for most of the time I was making the song. I think I got the idea for it when I was in Germany, then I wrote most of the lyrics when I was in Washington, DC. A good portion of the instruments were made at my parents’ house in Bayonne, NJ, while the mixing and mastering were done in my place in Jersey City, NJ. I worked with an agency to get the vocals recorded so I never actually met the vocalist, but I believe it was recorded either in Nashville or in New York.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I have just released my website, www.sebastianhex.com, where I will be doing occasional blog posts, updates, and other fun stuff. I mostly communicate with people on Instagram or Twitter right now so it will be nice to actually publish longer, more comprehensive posts for others to read.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m going back to Europe soon, but not to perform music. Someday though I hope to tour and perform live!
What else is happening next in Sebastian Hex’s world?
Now that I have gained some decent knowledge and experience in producing music, I’m looking to learn DJing and playing music live for an audience. It’s a little intimidating to think about, but I can’t behind a computer forever!
