INTERVIEW: Wildways

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Toli: Hello! It’s a pretty hot summer here in Russia, so everything is amazing!

Denis: It’s something unusual for you in Russia Toli? I live in Ukraine and it is always hot as fuck here.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Self Riot”?

Toli: “Self Riot” is the second track off the album and goes along with the Doomsday concept. It is still the early phases of questions whether Doomsday is real of not before finding out the truth later in the album. The lyrics “Take a look around, look we all drown” – say it all.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Toli: Oh yeah, everything is happening here in Russia, as I said “Take a look around, look we all drown”. I sing this in chorus and all political and social things are happening here inspired me to write the lyrics for this song. It’s a pretty hard time. “Self Riot” means I have to rise up against that all and I gotta be strong in a hard time of country’s life.

Denis: I wrote the music and actually I don’t remember what inspired me, it was like almost a year ago. One thing I remember the working title of the song was “Coco” haha.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Denis: This is our second video from the album “Day X”. The shooting of the video lasted a couple days in the city of Sochi, Russia. There were many problems associated with the release and editing of the video. The filming was completed in December 2017 but for many reasons the release took place only now. We invited our fans to take part in the shootings. They perfectly coped with their roles and very well fit into the video.

Toli: Yeah, it was pretty hard to organize everything. Honestly when we got a 1st version of the video we just didn’t want to release it. And made a decision to shot a band play part after a couple of months

The single comes off your new album Day X – what’s the story behind the title?

Denis: The album tells the story of the Doomsday, the last day for each of us. A day that will raise many questions, like how we lived our lives and whether we were always honest to ourselves.

Toli: We just wanted to put ourselves in a place when you know the next 30 days will be the last in your life. How would you live these days?

How was the recording and writing process?

Denis: The creation of the album took us two years. There were a lot of songs written during this time, but we selected 12 tracks that in our opinion best reflect our musical thinking during this period. The recording of the album took place in America in Phoenix and lasted a month. The producer of this album was Cameron Mizell.

Toli: Writing and recording process are the most boring parts in musician’s life. It’s totally opposite then tours. We had a lot of barriers and problems on this record but I’m happy we finally did it.

What was it like to work with Cameron Mizell and how did that relationship develop?

Denis: In every album, Cameron understands us and knows what we need from sound. We wanted to say a lot with new material and he supported us as nobody in all experiments.

Toli: It’s always so much fun to work with Cameron, haha.

How much did he get to influence the album?

Toli:  I would say he didn’t change a lot in our songs because he liked them from the beginning, but definitely gave us some pointers here and there.

Denis : He offered so many good ideas for new songs, so in the process we improved many new songs. The sound on this album didn’t change much, it became more mature, we approached on this album one more step closer to what we can truly be proud of.

What role does Russia play in your music?

Toli: As I said in the beginning of this interview – really a lot. It has definitely has inspired my lyrics. Yeah we travel a lot but don’t forget where we live and our mind’s, lifestyle and problems are pretty different than yours. I think it’s about all countries.

As you gain more success with each new material – does that put any pressure on you or rather the opposite?

Toli: I would say opposite. There is pressure if we don’t have a success with our releases.

Denis: Toli is right.

What aspect of doom and truth did you get to explore on this record?

Denis : Raising the themes of sadness, doom, faith, loneliness, we explored our lives, mistakes that we would like to avoid. We wanted to show the situation in which the end is close and you can’t change anything anymore and to give listeners an opportunity to make some conclusions and change their lives.

What made you want to explore those themes?

Denis : These are eternal questions that don’t give us rest. It is necessary to live today and stay true to ourselves this is the main thing that we wanted to say.

Any plans to hit the road?

Toli: Plans are to play as many shows as we can here in Russia and Europe but we would definitely love to play in the US.

What else is happening next in Wildways’ world?

Toli: We try to decide what language we want to sing our songs, Eng or Rus or both. Thoughts Vents readers?
