Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Cole Walsh-Davis (Guitar): Thanks so much for having us! We’ve been doing great, it’s been really awesome to finally get to show everybody what we’ve been working on.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Waves”?

It was the last song written for the record and stands out stylistically. It’s got a trippy vibe and it was rad to have our friend Eric Nally help us really push it there. We all felt we had created a sound inside the track that none of us had quite heard before which really excited us.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I was at Alex’s house one night and played the main riff on an acoustic he had lying around, and he said “make a song from that.”  A day later I had the whole song demoed out sans horns and vocals. When we were ready to start writing lyrics, we knew we wanted a story of some kind – what we we ended up with is a look into the scorpion venom-induced hallucinations of a lost man.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was amazing working with our friends Ruef Design, they’re stellar both as humans as and filmmakers. This was their first foray into music videos and they absolutely killed it. They created the effects from scratch and took the concept to another level.

How was the recording and writing process?

We recorded everything besides drums at either my house or Alex’s, so we were able to take our time writing the vocal parts and getting final takes on everything. When we were ready to start writing lyrics, we knew we wanted a story of some kind – what we we ended up with is a look into the scorpion venom-induced hallucinations of a lost man.

What role does Cincinnati play in your writing?

We’ve all been playing music in Cincinnati for over a decade, so it’s in our blood. Even our buddy Mitch Wyatt who mixed the album in Arizona is a Cinci O.G.  Cincinnati’s music scene has always been robust and full of talent and we want to keep up that standard of excellence on this record. It’s Cincinnati as hell.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical background?

While we definitely tried to make the record sonically diverse, I think it really sound like a meld of all of us and how we’ve influenced each other over the years. Foxy Shazam, Look Afraid, Banderas, Cadaver Dogs, Honeyspiders, The Skulx – we’ve all been playing music with each other in various combinations forever. This is the next step in the evolution.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

We immediately thought of Eric when Waves was in its early stages. It was a pleasure working with him on the track and we all had a blast putting it together. Part of the idea of the album was to get a ton of our friends to do guest spots, so that was in the DNA from the beginning – but on the other hand the project started with my basement demos and 90% of the music for the record was written before there were any vocals at all. Ultimately though this record took a village and the goal was to have fun and impress each other throughout the process. We wanted to songs to change and gain layers of complexity as everybody got their hands on it. It’s been one big, long, beautiful collaboration.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Incredible! The whole album is finished and we can’t wait for people to get the full scope of the project. We partnered with our dear friend Austin Kihn at Mind Over Matter Records and we’ve got some killer super limited vinyl coming along with the digital release.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Self-titled debut album coming later this year!

Any plans to hit the road?

As of now the plan is to hit hard, make some noise, and then *poof*.  We want everything surrounding the record to feel valuable, fleeting, unmissable. Not sure how it will play out but I’d say it’s a good bet you’ll wanna be at the album release show if you can help it.

What else is happening next in COOL LIFE’s world?

We’ve got a single and lyric video dropping for our song Repeater on Friday, August 31st, Full-length debut album coming soon!
