Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I’ll Remember You”?
I wrote it for a film I composed for called The Mad Axeman which is about Frank Mitchell who was connected to the Kray Twins. Theres a scene in the film where he’s dancing with Lisa – the girl brought in by the Krays to try and calm down Mitchell while he was incarcerated in this flat in Bow. It’s a brief moment before he was taken and apparently executed. I only wrote 1 minute of the song originally to fit the scene but later realised how strong the song was so finished it off with the help from producer Jon Kelly (Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Chris Rea) I recorded it as a duet with Songwriter and DJ Iraina Mancini. We then filmed the video in Buenos Aires which you can see on youtube.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
We filmed the video in Buenos Aires. I love the city. It has some great locations. Jardin Japones and Cementerio De La Recoleta. Actress & Model Aleksandra Ana Spajik stars in the clip. We shot it in one day. Aleksandra was super to work with. It was a Sunday and also her birthday but she still worked and put everytihng into her performance.
The single comes off your new album 7 Blood – what’s the story behind the title?
7 Blood is about super pathogens and covert cyber activity. I’d been bitten by a tick and was dealing with the fallout of Lyme, trying to function normally on a daily basis while being controlled by this really clever bacteria that can basically disguise itself from the immune system. I watched the documentary call Hypernormalisation by.. i think its Adam Curtis and then Zero Days which is about the Stuxnet virus. I thought there were some spooky connections here than needed to be looked into at a deeper level. around the same period I composed for a film called Pylon directed by Jono Smith which is also looking at the same subject so there were several synchronicity’s floating around. I walked with a herb doctor up a mountain in Andalucia to pick a killing herb to attack the bacteria. The herb was called 7 Blood.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process for every album i have made has been exponential, you start off with some ideas, take that first step, then along the road to completion it picks up pace, you get more into the zone of recording and more prolific. Then of course the clock ticks and pressure mounts to finish it so personally in my experience that brings some exciting surprises to the table music-wise.
How Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra has influences your writing?
Well I have been a big fan of Elvis, Sinatra a little later on. I love great voices, voices that can hit you head on with emotion, straight to the heart. The thing with Elvis is that he seemed to know how to capture you with every phrase. Frank’s sheer power was awesome. I love putting on his records. Great escapism from these crazy times.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ll be touring Europe in November and Australasia in January and February 2019.
What else is happening next in Blair Jollands’ world?
I’m going to disappear into Scotland for a while, fishing with my son.
