INTERVIEW: Desirée Dawson

Hi Desiree, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thanks for having me. I’m doing great! Feeling inspired 🙂

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Just Fine”?

Just Fine is a song about my journey as a creative and as an ultra-sensitive human being navigating this world. I am constantly excited, inspired and ready to take on new projects all while simultaneously feeling waves of worry, doubt and fear. The song comes as a reminder to myself, and anyone else in a similar place, that even when that battle between love and fear seems impossibly strong, its all going to be Just Fine.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Yes! I work with a holistic business & health coach who assists me in approaching business and personal growth from a holistic view point. Her name is Kristy Davis and her business is called Sharing Light. We were exploring some fears that were really holding me back and after a very powerful session I felt a huge shift and this song just flowed out of me. I brought the song to producer Cody Taylor of Fiend Recordings http://fiendrecordings.ca/ and he added so much magic to the song!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Project AM Productions (projectamfilms.com) is a team based here in Vancouver and they did an amazing job at making sure my vision was brought to life in such a special way. It was such a fun process which included hanging out in my apartment and alongside some of my best friends. It was a lovely time.

How was the recording and writing process?

Great! Very smooth and natural and it all just fell into place so easily.

What role does Vancouver play in your writing?

Vancouver, the traditional ancestral territory of the Coast Salish Salish people, has been my home for a long time. I’m comfortable enough here that I feel safe to be vulnerable, create and draw inspiration from the amazing land that I live on. I find that I also feel comfortable enough that I often feel the push to leave Vancouver and to get out of my comfort zone to experience life in a different way which always leads to a lot of musical creations.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

Collaborating with new people is fun and exciting. I always make sure to bring my true self to any session but love the places I can go within myself with the inspiration of someone else’s unique style.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Any plans to hit the road?

New music is coming soon and I will be on the road very soon too. I am still finalizing details so make sure to check www.desireedawsonmusic.com for updates on all of those things!

What else is happening next in Desiree Dawson’s world?

What’s coming up? More music, more collaborations, more community building and more rest time so I can go out into the world fully charged up!
