INTERVIEW: Rise The Artist

Hi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m great! I really feel I couldn’t be better; I am truly blessed.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Unity”?

Unity was inspired by current events in our Country as well as around the world. I look around and see so much gun violence in our society that I was motivated to write this song.

*Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It was a bunch of random events over the past two years. However, I make reference to the “Facebook Killer” in the second verse. This was the situation where Steve Stephens shot Robert Godwin Sr. for no reason and streamed it live on Facebook. I am still saddened by this cold blooded heartless attack.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

The video was filmed in San Francisco, California. The storyline is that of a young man selling a pair of “Jordan’s” tennis shoes online, who meets the buyer in person and is robbed at gun point. View it now at: https://youtu.be/Bgv3o6j5MEQ

What’s the story behind the title?

America needs unity! The world needs to stand together right now. The hook says it all, “something is wrong, can you see what’s going on, I turn the TV on and see the killings happen, can someone tell me what happened to the community, we need love and peace so we can have unity”

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing this song left my heart heavy but also gave me hope. Heavy from the day to day violence plaguing or neighborhoods. Hope that the community will come back together. Hope that no more families have to burry their loved ones due to gun violence. Hope that people would choose love over hate. Hope that this dying world would eventually if not already embrace Jesus who is the way, the truth and the life. Recording this song was like a breath of fresh air! I’m glad I got to collaborate with Tony Jazzo on such a meaningful project.

*How does your Faith influence your music?

My faith inspires my music because I have accountability. God first and then everything else. Here’s a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived – that is to have succeeded.”

*What role does the Bay Area play in your writing?

I feel like my sound is Bay Area! We have a certain swag here. We dress, talk and walk Bay. This is my home so I couldn’t change that part even if I tried LOL. More other than not my writings are influenced by the Creator. It’s usually a divined process that can take minutes or days and leaves me feeling incredible.

*Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?

If I’m collaborating with another CHH (Christian Hip Hop) artist, I don’t have to filter my content or creativity. When I work with an artist outside of my genre I tend to be a bit more neutral in my content in hopes to reach more their audience.

*Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

I am always working on new music. I have some stuff in my vault but I’m also working on a new project. I won’t give too many details right now but I’ll say; It’s a collaboration track with dope CHH artist!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

It’s called “Wake Up!” I’m tentatively planning to release it in early 2019. Be on the look out, it’s gonna be fire!

Any plans to hit the road?

I don’t have any road shows booked at this moment. However, I am planning to hit the road in the very near future. I will be sure to keep everyone updated on my website. I just performed at “Arts & Improv Night”-Cornerstone SF. View it now at: https://youtu.be/SK69wLss2os

What else is happening next in Rise The Artist’s world?

I’ve just been busy promoting the new single, Unity (featuring Tony Jazzo). Advocating for love and peace through my music and artistry. I am donating all the profits from the CD sales of “Unity” to UP! United Playaz is violence prevention and youth development organization.
