INTERVIEW: Monster On The Horizon

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Things have been very busy in the Monsters World. We are super excited about the future.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Mr. Scary“?

Mr. Scary is the sonic personification of what we are feeling about what is happening in the world around us. The Political and Racial Divide in this country seems to be coming to a head. “Mr. Scary” addresses these issues directly. One of the best feelings is hearing a packed room sing back to you “They say keep your head down bite your tongue. Wouldn’t want to wake the others. They say trust the stories that you’re sold. Need salvation, look no further.” (The Chorus from Mr. Scary) We believe you can make great contemporary music with substance.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I think everything that has been happening in America over the last 100 years found it’s way into that song. Music and songs tend to write themselves. Sometimes it can be just a simple conversation with friends that are hanging out at our studio 1166 – that inspires or triggers something that evolves into a song. That is definitely a great example of a song that was birthed in the studio after one such conversation. Being a part of an artistic collective, that includes visual, musical, and literary creatives the amount of inspiration around us is constant.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We dropped the “Mr. Scary” track on all streaming and digital platforms on Friday the 13th July, and the video will be dropping in the next few weeks.

How was the recording and writing process?

How we have tended to work, is The R.O.A.R. will usually have a beat or instrumental, that BLK ZEN + Lone Wolf will come up with lyrical and melodic ideas over. Songs tend to be recorded fast, usually within 3-4 hours a song can pretty much be written and recorded, and then it bounces back in forth to be mixed and tweaked. Our drummer comes in to add the final layer and power.

Known for playing with different genres – how do you balance them together?

Being that we all come from such different backgrounds, all of our influences somehow gel together into what has become Monsters On The Horizon. Genre has never actually been a discussion we have had. We just followed what naturally came out of us. Having 2 producers, and 4 song writers in the band from all different genres definitely has it’s advantages.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes. We are actually on a roll at the moment. We have one song on deck called “MEGAdeth” which is a companion to “Mr. Scary” ready to go.  We have an EP’s worth of older material that is also recorded and finished, as well as 3 new songs that we are excited about that are in varying degrees of completion. We will look to drop something in October, which is our favorite month of the year.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

October a new Monster will be coming.

Any plans to hit the road?

We will be doing a mini tour in Salem in October, performing at Salem Horror Fest events.

What else is happening next in Monsters On The Horizon‘s world?

The premiere of the “Mr. Scary” video is up next, followed by “MEGAdeth” and then an EP in October. It’s going to be an exciting wrap up to an amazing year.
