Hi Constanza, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello! Thanks so much for this interview! Here my answers to your questions 🙂
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Packing Up”?
Packing Up is a song I wrote to encourage each other on a journey to hope as we travel through adverse circumstances.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I initially got inspired from my experience emigrating to Australia from my native country Chile, which happened in a moment in my life where I was hungry to grow and learn so I challenged myself to jump into the unknown. But this song has deepened even more in its meaning as I travel thorough challenging and painful circumstances in life…
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
It was so exciting! But at the same time, it is a challenge to manage your first music video as a solo artist. I filmed it in my native country, Chile, and that was so special because of how it relates to the meaning of the song. I wanted to show the beauty of Chile’s landscapes and also support the incredible film industry that Chile has. I had the pleasure to shoot my video with Usual Producciones and be directed by Mauro Veloso, who I met before when he was the director of photography in a TV series I starred on as teenager called “Karkú” which was broadcast through Nickelodeon Latin America. I am so happy with the result and how the production team really understood my vision with the video.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote this song when I was studying my bachelor of music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). The melody and lyrics really flowed naturally and then I spent some time arranging the song adding the brass section and backing vocals. I had the blessing to record this songs with musicians that have played with household names such as Stevie Wonder, Shakira and Justin Timberlake.
What role does Australia and Chile play in your music?
Both play a huge role. The music I write is a consequence of the experiences living in both countries.
Australia has been home to me in the last 8 years. It is a very multicultural country that has taught me to respect and learn from different cultures. It gave me the opportunity to hone my musical skills studying music at University and receive love and respect from people. Here I got inspired to feel proud of my Latin American background and use it within my music. That’s why you can especially hear the influence of Latin music in my song Packing Up.
How your eclectic cultural background has influence you as an artist?
Now more than ever my songs have this fusion of the different styles that have influenced me in my life such as pop, folk, jazz and latin music, but this has naturally come together. I’ve been letting my writing be as honest as it can be. I want to celebrate the beauty of embracing the diversity and feeling proud of the road I have travelled musically and by doing this, taking the opportunity to be listened to and share meaningful lyrics.
Does your acting influences your music and the other way around?
Music came first and then I had the opportunity to do acting. I love both but I am currently focusing on my original music.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
In terms of songwriting, I haven’t yet co-written a song with anyone yet, I wrote all the songs from my latest EP by myself. But when you are collaborating in music in any of its areas you need to respect the opinions of the person you are working with and focus on just looking for what is best serve the song.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I am still focusing on promoting my recent EP and looking forward to filming more videos but of course I am continuing to write new songs and I look forward to sharing them when the right time comes.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not yet, but you will know soon!
Any plans to hit the road?
I really want to! As an independent artist you can’t easily make those things happen from one day to another. I am doing local gigs at the moment but I am planning to go to America and hopefully start playing there.
What else is happening next in Constanza Herrero’s world?
We will see where my music leads me, all I want to do is to enjoy the journey and continue to use my voice to bring a little bit of hope to this world.
