INTERVIEW: Mason

Hi Mason, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Splendid! Summer is in full force so plastic festival beer cups all around, muddy shoes and different wristbands each week.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Stop Start Fast Slow”?

It’s a straight up jacking house track featuring The Manor on vocal, a UK grime act that I really love. It’s released on the legendary Island Records, the label that brought you Bob Marley, Amy Whinehouse, U2 etc, which makes one humble to release on….

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We’ve made a lot of querky animations for this single, that might turn into a full video at some point. Keep an eye out for this!

How was the recording and writing process?

I had this studio session in London with the Manor in this gigantic studio cave. I brought al sorts of ideas from my studio in Amsterdam and we just recorded load of ideas and bits. This ‘Stop Start Slow Fast’ line became a bit of an earworm for me, so I built a new instrumental around that vocal recording. That’s usually how I work, one element can lead to a totally new track.

What role does France play in your music?

Pfff where do I start?  I grew up listening to people like Serge Gainsbourg. But also in house music there must be something special in the drinking water, as France has brought so many amazing artists in the past. But also nowadays I’m really digging plenty of newer French artists, such as Malikk, Tim Baresko and Boston Bun.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

The most collaborations I do are with vocalists and it can work in many different ways really. I could have a very clear idea what I’m looking for.  Or I don’t and I just bring a bunch of instrumentals and we just freestyle and record whatever comes. Other times someone has a vocal idea that I build a new track around. I’ve had the pleasure to work with some very talented artists, such as Roisin Murphy, Run DMC and Shingai (Noisettes) who’s creativity just really inspire.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material? How’s that coming along?

For sure. I have no life and am always in studio, so sh*tloads of new music coming your way.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

In September there will be a single on Spinnin Records called ‘Reminders Of You’, with the talented Alex Clare on vocals…   And in October a new release on Loulou Records called ‘Disruptor’…. … and more coming afterwards, also on my own Animal Language label.

Any plans to hit the road?

Always! I’m halfway festival season so a lot of that… Also doing this tour together with Dr. Lektroluv that’s turning out to be a lot of fun.  Apart from that, Sharam Jey, Betoko and me started this project called ‘Bigger Than Us’, where we’re writing music for and planning some shows with the three of us… Keeping myself off the streets in other words!

What else is happening next in Mason’s world?

My second son just got born so there’s a lot of that happeing in my world. Beats anything doesnt’ it ?
