INTERVIEW: Lucy Whittaker

Hi Lucy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey guys! I’m really well thanks. It’s been a busy few months getting everything ready to release ‘Who’s Gonna Know’ but we’ve made it!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single ‘Who’s Gonna Know’?

“Who’s Gonna Know’ embodies my new sound – it’s darker, grittier, and more honest than anything I’ve released before. I wrote the track with my producer Monkey Harper, and for me it signifies the start of the next chapter in my musical life. Expect something darker.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

The track is about the dark desires that everybody feels at some point, and trying to keep those feelings hidden (whilst also giving in to them). You can use your imagination!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’ll be dropping the video this week so keep your eyes peeled and check my socials!

How was the recording and writing process?

We had so much fun writing ‘Who’s Gonna Know’, as I reached a point where I wanted to start taking more risks with my music, and trying out new sounds. I was set on creating a darker sound, so my producer (Monkey Harper) and I just let loose and tried everything out – and ‘Who’s Gonna Know’ was born!

What was it like to work with Yizzy and how did that relationship develop?

Yizzy is a really cool guy and he’s doing amazing things for Grime right now. I’ve been following him for a while and knew that his sound would be perfect for the song. I showed him the track, he did his thing, and it all came together pretty smoothly.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

I love collaborating with other songwriters and producers, because it makes the process even more exciting. Having someone to bounce ideas off and vibe with it’s so much fun – and I also need to work with people who aren’t afraid to tell me when an idea is not quite right. You all need to be honest with each other, as that’s when you make the best music.

What made you want to seek for a darker direction?

It felt like the right time for me to grow as an artist. I wanted to explore a different side to what I could create, and just got so excited along the way that I knew we had to release ‘Who’s Gonna Know’.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I’ve got so many new tracks ready to go, and I can’t wait to share them. My sound has definitely developed so I hope you’re ready for something new.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

All I’ll say is expect more music before the year is over…

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m on a UK tour right now! I’ve been playing some amazing shows and have met so many cool people along the way. London Pride was a highlight for me as it kicked off the summer tour, and it was the first time I performed my new music to an audience. It felt so good! I’ve still got more shows to go before summer is up – you can catch me at some of the UK’s biggest Pride festivals (Manchester, Leeds etc), at my hometown in Cheltenham, and we’ve got a few more surprise dates to release.

What else is happening next in Lucy Whittaker’s world?

Things are busy. I’m going to be playing more shows (both UK and internationally), releasing more music, and I’ve got some exciting announcements to come. I hope you love the new music!
