Zyles, a self-described “professional pop” outfit, has just released a new single just in time for peak Summer season. “Sundresses”, which recently premiered on Substream Magazine, is the first in a string of smooth retro-pop Summer singles to be released by Zyles in the coming months. “Sundresses” features nostalgically bouncy production highlighted by rhythmic guitar playing reminiscent of Nile Rodgers, combined with a synth-laden chorus that brings to mind all the feel-good poolside vibes of yesteryear. Lyrically—like much of Zyles’ output—the track focuses on a specific sophisticated romance, with the backdrop of privileged elites enjoying California wine country.

Zyles also commented on the inspiration behind the track: “As a San Francisco resident the last couple years, I finally started spending more time in the warmer months escaping the city to Wine Country and noticed quite the phenomenon. Extended time off in the summertime outside the city unlocks a state of mind beyond the weekend — so it’s already worth singing about — but add in a destination for birthdays and bachelorette parties and we’re approaching transcendent territory. “Sundresses” aims to capture a fantasy of some of these vacationers searching for fun and purpose during their formative years.”

Zyles is the creative brainchild of Zachary Yellin-Flaherty, who has spent the last decade immersed in the tech trenches of the Bay Area, expressing  his worldly insights through pop music—universal songs about the realities and fantasies of young professionals with a distinctly Northern California aesthetic. The Zyles sound is a blend of retro and contemporary pop with stylish production that serves as the perfect vehicle for his take on modern romance.

Born and raised in Manhattan, Zyles grew up playing rock and blues, followed by more formal jazz training. While attending Stanford where he belonged to the jazz orchestra, Zyles spent time studying abroad in China, which was the inspiration behind his newfound musical moniker—Zyles comes from the re-romanization of his Chinese name, 叶子力 (Ye Zi Li). After graduation, while living and working in San Francisco and armed with his experiences working in the tech world, Yellin-Flaherty gave birth to Zyles, a project that is informed thematically by the glory and absurdity of today’s city living, and musically by Yellin Flaherty’s carefully crafted urbane pop.

With his forthcoming string of new singles, Zyles is looking to flip the pop script, and do so with finely crafted songs and a refreshingly dynamic take on what is means to chase love as a twenty-something professional.
