Hi Keith, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
KW: Hey thanks for having me! I’ve been doing well! I’m back out on tour with Breaking Benjamin at the moment, but I had a nice little summer break, which was awesome.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Summer Sunday“?
KW: Absolutely! It’s been a while since I released any new solo material, four years I believe, so I felt like it was time to start putting stuff out there. I’ve been writing off and on since my last EP, but about a year ago I started working with producer Colin Brittain, and some of the songs really began to take shape. I’m super excited for everyone to hear my new songs, starting with Summer Sunday!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
KW: Yes and No. I think the inspiration was a combination of the nostalgia of youth and young love with a combined love of 80’s music.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
KW: Yes! We filmed the video a few weeks ago in and around Nashville. The director was Kyle Cogan, who worked on the last 4 BB videos, and I was super excited he said yes to work on one for my music!
What was the recording and writing process?
KW: I wrote this song with some friends of mine, Brian Craddock and Josh Paul of Daughtry over the last year. We would send ideas back and forth until we felt we had reached a good place. Technology has really helped make long distance writing easier.
How does your approach differ when working with the band versus on your own?
KW: It’s completely different sounding music, so the mindset has to be catered to that particular style. I love the challenge of switching it up, but with my stuff it’s a little bit less pressure, because I’m the only one that needs to like it. The band has a definite sound and direction, and there are four guys pushing ourselves to write the best stuff we can, so that can be really inspiring.
Can you talk to us more about your new project?
KW: I’m gonna put music out and play shows whenever I can! Everyone has been super encouraging and I’ve been super inspired!
Any tentative release date in mind?
KW: Planning on August 3rd for the release, and the video to follow soon after.
Any plans to hit the road?
KW:Absolutely, whenever I have time that doesn’t conflict with BB.
