Hi Sumi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! I’ve been great, preparing the next release now. Thank you for having me here!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Spacey Love”?

Yes! I started this new project with a producer, Brian Lindgren, and it is the first single. We wanted to make an entertaining and danceable track. We were collecting inspirations before we got officially started. Then one day Brian played this track for me, and it was still unfinished at that time but I immediately fell in love with it!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I tend to come up with songwriting ideas at night. Originally, I had a different concept for this song but I got stuck writing. I was looking out of the window next to my desk one night while I was writing, and the dark and clear night sky reminded me of how I live for my passion (music), and it gives me pleasure.  I felt so connected, and wanted to celebrate the moment and devoted lifestyle. You know those moments do not happen often, and it is one of the best feelings you can ever get.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Hmmm, I wish! since I have all those visual images in my head.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was fun and challenging! I took some time to work on lyrics especially because I mixed two different “spacey” meanings, and they were related to each other so I worked on these were making sense. I recorded at Brian’s home studio in Brooklyn. That’s where we work all the time so I felt comfortable to record there.

How your upbringing has influence your music?

I grew up watching my mom playing the piano and singing opera. I played the piano and flute for years when I was young so I used to listen to classical music a lot. In the meantime, I was also listening to Japanese and western dance music. I think these experiences definitely influenced my music.

What role does NYC play in your writing?

Actually, this new project was inspired by NYC and its urban life. It is like pulling out one specific character (of mine) living in the city. Every emotion is so intense, and it is ok to keep your identity and create your new own identity here.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, more singles are coming out this summer. I am excited!

Any plans to hit the road?

I am working on it and hoping 2018-19 will be a fun ride.

What else is happening next in SUMI’s world?

I am preparing more single release now, and also got some ideas for new songs so I cannot wait to start! I hope to see you guys soon at the show to dance with me!
