INTERVIEW: Australian Folk William Crighton

Hi William, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been well. Thank you for having me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Happiness”?

Sure, it was one of the first we recorded for the album. We recorded it a bunch of different ways – ended up liking a version that was originally recorded with baritone electric, drums and vocals.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

It was New Years Day and I was sitting on a mates lawn watching the sun come up when an ant bit me and then told me the meaning to life is happiness.

The single comes off your new album Empire – what’s the story behind the title?

The songs pointed me toward that title. We wrote this album from dreams and experiences that we’ve had and observations of life.

How was the recording and writing process?

We recorded most of the album at Matt Sherrod’s studio in Tennessee. Some of it was recorded in Australia as well. It’s all very live and there are happy accidents throughout.
I wrote some of the lyrics with my wife Julieanne too.

How Johnny Cash and Nick Cave has influence your writing?

I’ve listened to JC since I was a kid, his voice and his ability to bring you in to the story is like no other. Nick Cave is the same in his own way. Both very inspiring artists.

What role does Australia play in your music?

I’m inspired by the things here that transcend that name.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

The world around us. Inspiration is everywhere.

Any plans to hit the road?

Always. Playing music with people and for people is the main motivation for the music.

What else is happening next in your world?

Everything’s always changing, see where it takes us.
