After a number of additional projects, constantly striving to feed their creative hunger, the band have returned with a fresh sound on this summer smasher ‘Ice Cream Man’ bursting with Pop infused Dub, Reggae & Drum N Bass flavours. Bloom’s vocal performance is striking, exacerbated by Sam’s brass hook-lines and an electrifying trumpet solo, contributing to a stunning live appeal. 2018 festival anthem. Now they’re back with brand new track ‘Ice Cream Man’,just in time for the heatwave! As Sam says:
“ Ice Cream Man is a really fun reggae track with a Drum n Bass twist! A proper sing along Summer tune, perfect for the festival season! It captures our live sound well, characteristically rich with fat brass, heavy beats and fat bass.”
Sam and The Womp are a group that’s unafraid of pushing the envelope. Their catalogue spans from Dub to Drum N Bass to big brass fuelled Balkan Funk and beyond! The UK band, which mainly consists of vocalist Bloom de Wilde and trumpeter Sam Ritchie, have spent the last several years bringing their party driven sound to the live circuit here and internationally.
Their backgrounds in jazz and experimental songwriting is what fuels today’s desire to push the boundaries of music. Since university the duo of Bloom de Wilde and Sam Ritchie have been involved in experimental bands showcasing the weird and the wonderful. It’s this love of the avant-garde, that led to the pair writing their biggest hit to date, ‘Bom Bom’, taking them all around the world and to the top of the U.K Charts in 2012. Here’s the song that started it off for them and has sold over 1 million copies worldwide and earned 4 x Platinum status in Australia:
Since then, the duo have had another string of great singles and took a well deserved bit of time-off. Bloom and Sam now have two kids but have lost none of the hunger for live performance. Last year saw the band play a packed festival and touring schedule. Bloom even performed at last year’s Boomtown Fair festival while heavily pregnant. This year they take to the road again with a string of festival dates, including Wilderness Festival.
In addition, we get to sit with the band to discuss the new single and more!
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We are feeling great! This has already been an amazing year for us and we are
loving the hot weather in the UK this Summer!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Ice Cream Man”?
Ice Cream Man is our Summer anthem this year – fun, brassy reggae sunshine vibes transforming into a Drum and Bass party!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Following a huge devouring of ice cream in Camden Town we were inspired to write the song! We all have a favourite Ice Cream flavour!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes we filmed the video few weeks back- it is was an amazing funny day and the end result will be crazy colourful! Bloom is directing and producing the video herself and is doing all the time consuming animation for it now.. We can’t wait to share it with the world very soon!
How was the recording and writing process?
Reggae was the obvious path to go down for this one, written initially with a guitar. The lyrics and music flowed spontaneously with the bass line and melody in the chorus initially in unison.. simple but catchy!
We have always enjoyed jamming on Dubby Drum n Bass grooves live, so we made the arrangement to suit the live band vibe that always goes down well at festivals.
We recorded the instruments in the Cowshed studio in North London and then my (Sam’s) cousin Daniel Griffiths, the newest member of the band, added his production magic.
We tested out the arrangement live at Secret Garden Party in the Summer last year and the audience responded massively so we new we were onto a winner. Bloom was heavily pregnant last year so we planned to release it this year. Bloom recorded the vocals only a month after the birth of our son and then we mixed it. We like it!
After the success you’ve received in the past – do you feel any pressure on you as you release new material?
Not anymore! The year after our big hit we felt the pressure to do it again.. but now we just make the music we wanna make and have fun with it. We release our own material without being pressured by external forces.. We do it for the love!
Known for playing with different genres – how do you normally balance all them together?
Each song is different but it normally comes naturally so not to sound forced. There is always fat brass, beats and bass – no matter what genre the track is. With Bom Bom we combined Balkan and Funk with House and Bass music.. Here with Ice Cream Man its Reggae/Dub, Ragga and Drum n Bass. Bloom’s quirky and distinctive vocals bring the alternative Pop vibe to our songs.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
Yes it is all about balance when collaborating, getting the best of both worlds and not imposing too much.. I have collaborated a lot this year with different producers and have made a decision to be as spontaneous as possible- improvising melodies, letting the lines flow and trusting my musicality. Rather than doing lots of editing and production myself, the producer does it and I concentrate on the music- it is less stressful and time consuming this way!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
We have released a lot of music this year already: Womp Records Vol. 1(incl. Bloom de Wilde and Sam and the Womp songs) earlier in the year and in the Spring the ‘Bee Sides‘ EP featuring ‘Posh Ragga‘. However Ice Cream Man is our favourite! We now have a full album of songs released separately. We will release a full length album later this year, after negotiation with our old label, which will include an extended version of Bom Bom. We are currently collaborating on new songs with a few other artists and its sounding fresh! Bloom is making her own album which I (Sam) am also involved with – it is magical, dreamy and brilliant!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
We can happily announce The Ice Cream Man ‘Jstar’ remix will be released on 31st August! It is a Dub master piece! Bloom’s new songs will be ready for the Autumn. Sam and The Womp album Xmas!
Any plans to hit the road?
We a currently playing at festivals every weekend in a different part of the country it is really fun this year and sunny- Perfect for Ice Cream! The travelling is actually enjoyable! The audiences are singing along to Ice Cream Man straight away – that gotta be a good thing! We especially looking forward to Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire in early August.
What else is happening next in Sam and the Womp’s world?
