INTERVIEW: Americana singer-songwriter and former House of Fools frontman Josh King

Hi Josh, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great! Thanks 🙂

Can you talk to us more about your song “Into The Blue”?

“Into the Blue” is a song I wrote over a long period of time. The first verse was written during a time when I was down and out and had lost all motivation to create. That’s why I stopped after that verse. I wrote the rest of the song after taking some time to make some huge changes in my life. I made a conscious decision to always keep my head up and move forward no matter what curve balls are thrown at me. Just choosing to have that state of mind has made all of the difference in my life.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

In the second verse I wrote “the devil tried to take me for an early ride”. When I was about 15 years old I almost died from appendicitis. I went two weeks with a ruptured appendix and the doctors couldn’t figure out what was going on. Luckily a bubble formed over the rupture and saved my life. Reflecting on that memory kind of put everything into perspective for me. Here I was as an adult complaining about my life when I should have been thanking God that I’m alive..

Any plans to release a video for the track?

I am actually talking with a good buddy of mine about ideas for a video. I’m thinking it will involve a swimming pool and a high dive.

How was the recording and writing process?

With this song, after i finished writing it i called my co producer and co writer up and we went and recorded a demo for it. After getting the rest of the songs for the album, we headed to Wilmington North Carolina and Recorded the album. I recorded the album with some of my best friends so the recording process was relaxed and fun. We chose not to stress about a single thing while recording and we actually pulled it off.

What role does Greensboro play in your writing?

I guess the people in Greensboro play more of a role in my writing than the actual city does. I’ve met and love a lot of friends here, but I also had to get rid of a few to make my life better. The song “The Stranger” on the album talks a lot about that.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical projects?

No. If anything, I wanted to have a piece of every project that I’ve had up until this point, in this album.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Every song was written about an experience or person that I have had in my life. I like to wake up early when everything is quiet and think about those people and things. That is normally when I write my songs as well.

Any plans to hit the road?

I will be doing little runs for now until the time calls for anything different. Of course I would love to get out there and go for it but these days it’s going to have to make sense.

What else is happening next in Josh King’s world?

I’m playing as much music that i possibly can while starting a family. My wife and I are expecting our first baby in November!
