I’ve been good thanks, preparing some touring, I’m ready to explore more of Europe this year!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “My Lover, Her Lover and Me”?
People project their desires onto each other, especially when they first meet, are magnetically drawn, but don’t know each other well. We create personalities and lay them over the people in front of us. Think of your own friends, family, work colleagues – they each see us differently – have their own perspective of who we are. How many people see us as we truly are? Is there one true self? When we project onto a lover, it can become even more confusing as sex and romance add intensity. We can be set adrift on false ideas.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, it’s based on true events – one of those experiences which tears and teaches in equal measure!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I’m working on something at the moment – early ideas, but it’ll be dark, hazy and neon atmospheric.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was lots of late sessions, experimenting and exploring ideas. We started at a farm in Oxford, recording the vocals and guitar live through the night. Then we took everything back to the producer Gavin Hammond’s warehouse studio in Stoke Newington and worked until dawn. Those twilight hours were magical – when you feel that you’re the only awake people in the world, and you’re exploring together, creating through the long still hours.
What role does Berlin play in your writing?
Berlin is a special City, it has its own rhythm and pulse. It’s quite seductive, and can pull you in. I love it’s combination of green parks, water ways, concrete and street art, late night gas lights, guitars and electronics. There’s a strong sense of community spirit, but also adventure and exploration.
How’s your new EP coming along?
It’s finished, and available for pre-order on i-tunes / all the usual places!
It’ll be out on August 3rd, and takes it’s name form the first single.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m playing some festivals in Germany over the next few months, and back out on tour through Europe. But I’m keen to get back into the studio in July/August. I have new songs ready to be shared.
What else is happening next in Russell Swallow’s world?
I’ve been living in Camden in London and enjoying a slightly more domestic lifestyle! I’m hosting events around London, and have been cooking BBQ for the family, reconnecting with friends, reading philosophy books. I’m trying my hand at gardening and learning how to nurture life in other forms.
