PREMIERE: New wave icon Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey Releases “Science Fiction”

Keeping up with our premiere Friday, we are teaming up with the iconic Tom Bailey of Thompson Twins for the premiere of his new single “Science Fiction,” the title track off their upcoming album. The song, inspired by space, is yet another example of Bailey’s signature flair for hook-laden, radio-friendly tunes.

Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey’s first new music in 25 years and first-ever solo album, SCIENCE FICTION, is due out next week on July 13th via Mikrokosmos/BFD and is distributed via The Orchard in North America.  The album is produced by Bailey himself but also features the production assistance of Hal Ritson (Chemical Brothers, David Guetta).  It was recorded all over the world (France, New Zealand, London) with the studio being Bailey’s laptop and set of headphones.  The songs on SCIENCE FICTION span the musical gamut – from synthpop meets soca to stadium pop.

In support of SCIENCE FICTION, Tom Bailey is now on the road on a massive North American tour with Boy George & Culture Club and The B’52s.  The tour also includes several headlining dates.  Please see below for the itinerary.

The Thompson Twins had huge hits on both sides of the Atlantic, with songs such as “Hold Me Now”, “Lies,” “Doctor Doctor”, “You Take Me Up,” “King For A Day” and “Love On Your Side”, providing the soundtrack for so many people’s lives in the mid-eighties. The band also enjoyed big success on the US dance chart with “Lies”, “In the Name of Love” and “Hold Me Now”, all reaching #1.  In 1985 the band played Live Aid at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia where they were introduced by Madonna to a crowd of over 100,000 and an estimated global TV audience of 1.9 billion across 150 nations. They were later joined on stage during their performance by Madonna, Steve Stevens and Nile Rodgers.

Formed in 1977, the original Thompson Twins trimmed down their line-up in 1982 to a three piece of Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway as they adopted a more electronic synthesizer-based sonic sound. Tom Bailey was the singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and, along with lyricist Alannah Currie, composed and arranged the Thompson Twins music.  The last Thompson Twins show was in Texas in August 1987. Since then Bailey has worked in many different areas of music, from the experimental electronic Babble and Kolab to the Indo-fusion of the Holiwater Band, the visual astronomy project BSP and the sound-system dub of International Observer.

In 2014, The Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey returned to the live stage with headline shows in the U.S. and Japan and in the summer of 2015 headlined six major festivals in the UK.  In April 2016, Bailey won the “Best Live Show 2015” award in UK’s Classic Pop magazine ahead of Duran Duran, Kylie and Kraftwerk, thus confirming Tom Bailey’s current live show as amongst the best on the planet.
