Grammy nominated duo Riton and Kah-Lo have unveiled the official video for their vibrant new production ‘Ginger’, which is directed by Sesan Ogunro – one of Nigeria’s most respected directors, known for creating videos for the likes of Wizkid, Snoop Dogg and D’banj.
Shot in South Africa, the video sees Kah-Lo and Riton meet up with the people of Soweto, with the locals expressing their flamboyant style through cleverley choreographed dance routines. Sesan Ogunro decided on the visual direction after visiting South Africa.
“A few months back I travelled around Johannesburg,” said Ogunro. “We went from the posh areas of Sandton down to the slums of Soweto. Throughout the journey I witnessed and experienced a mixture of cultures, people, textures, sounds and scenarios. Whilst in Soweto, I met these fun and peculiar set of guys that called themselves Skhothane – these were guys and girls that dressed very colourfully and had an equally vibrant lifestyle to boot.”
“I saw how they live. I saw them dance and decided I need to showcase this in a video. The Ginger video seemed perfect and once I played them the song and put them in front of the camera everything came alive.”
‘Ginger’ has seen the dynamic duo of Kah-Lo and Riton, who have amassed over 50 million streamson previous releases together, blend their talents to form a stomping house hit in their signature sound, with Kah-Lo’s rich Nigerian vocals bringing character to London-based DJ Riton’s hammering bassline. Already receiving a wealth of radio support, ‘Ginger’ has been playlisted by Rinse FM and Kiss Fresh, with addiitional spins from Annie Mac, Mistjam and Target across BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra, as well as plays across Beats 1 and BBC 6 Music.
The track follows their previous banger ‘Fake ID’, which has received heavy support from BBC Radio 1 – most notably from Annie Mac who invited Riton and Kah-Lo to play at her AMP Sounds night at KOKO in February. The rumbling house tune has reached over 8 million Spotify streams and followed the pair’s Grammy nomination for Best Dance Record on ‘Rinse & Repeat’.
Having built a strong and organic musical relationship, which first transpired from social media, the two have been going from strength to strength with each record, enjoying a hectic touring schedule. Throughout May, Kah-Lo supported Sofi Tukker on their North American tour, and together with Riton will be embarking on a tour around Australia in July. Not stopping there, they will also be playing at key festivals including Pukkelpop, Reading & Leeds, as well as SW4.
