If you still believe the world is run by politicians you are mistaken. Celebrities are taking over the world with product endorsements, real-estate investments and business ventures that have very little connection to their singing, acting, sporting or reality TV careers. Switch on the TV at any given time and you will be faced with a celeb punting a product or service. Whether it is Kourtney Kardashian or Jessica Alba touting the benefits of green light therapy or Rihanna endorsing Puma, not a day will go by without you being faced with the immense presence of a celeb. Creating their own food and drinks lines have also skyrocketed in popularity amongst celebs wanting to expand their horizons and while some of these lines have proven to be extremely successful, others failed dismally.
Bethenny Frankel – Skinnygirl
Bethenny Frankel might have become a household name thanks to her stint on The Real Housewives of New York but she is also a highly successful entrepreneur and owner of the ever-popular Skinnygirl range of food products. Bethenny created Skinnygirl Cocktails (low-cal alcoholic beverages) which apparently sold for a whopping $120 million back in 2011. She does, however, remain partners with Beam Suntory, building an empire that started out as nothing but a margarita now consists of an entire range of tasty guilt-free foods such as microwave popcorn, seltzers, and salad dressing.
George Clooney – Casamigos Tequila
Everything George Clooney touches seems to turn to gold, including one of the smoothest and most enjoyable tequilas around. Clooney, together with close friend (and husband to Cindy Crawford) Randy Gerber created Casamigos Tequila completely unintentionally while they were building their vacation homes in Cabo San Lucas. They were forced into ownership by their distillery after they spent more than 2 years perfecting the taste (and drinking more than 1,000 bottles a year). The tequila was named after the property the friends share and soon became one of the most sought-after brands amongst tequila lovers. In 2017 Casamigos was bought by Diageo, the world’s largest spirits manufacturer for nearly $1 billion, earning Clooney, Gerber and business partner Mike Meldman a whopping $333 million each.
Heidi Klum – Fruit Flirtations
Heidi Klum is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women in the world but she completely missed the mark when she launched her own brand of fruit gummies known as Fruit Flirtations in 2006. The smiling candies were rather eerily packaged in a bag that was adorned by Heidi’s own smiling face. Her claims that the gummies were a healthy snack were soon slammed by health experts who found them to be full of sugar and high and carbs. What was meant to be a sweet yet healthy treat became a bitter pill to swallow and Fruit Flirtations was ditched before it even had the chance to take off.
Kim Kardashian – Va-Va-Va-Nilla Cupcake Mix
Kim Kardashian is undeniably a hot commodity and has a couple of successful business ventures behind her name. Her Midas touch, however, let her down when she decided to launch her own line of vanilla cupcake mix through Famous Cupcakes in 2010. For $13 you could receive a kit complete with cupcake mix, cupcake liners, a recipe for frosting and pink sugar crystal sprinkles. Unfortunately for Kim and her cake-loving fans, the cupcake mix wasn’t a hit and Famous Cupcakes as a whole became defunct.
Unfortunately not even celebrity status can guarantee someone success when launching a new product line – they face the exact same risks as the Average Joe. If they are lucky their ideas will take off like George’s tequila did or, if not, it could crash-land like Heidi’s gummies. Chances are no celeb worth his salt will cry over spilled milk, they will simply wait in eager anticipation for the next big idea to come along and take the world by storm.
