Hi Xav, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been fantastic! And I’m extremely thankful to you guys for showing my new track love–it means everything to me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “All In (Summer Song)”?

The song is about that moment where you realize the person you’re with is truly the love of your life. I wanted it to portray the feeling just before you get on one knee to propose to your girlfriend, before she says yes!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not an exact event, but just feeling like music has been inundating us lately with so many songs about cheating, or loving someone and leaving them. I just wanted to make sure people knew that there are still those of us out there who love love!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The video was shot by a company called Phephilms–they were really great. I selected the locations and they really helped find the perfect framing for every shot. That ending shot with the cherry blossom petals was something that came serendipitously on set. So amazing!

How was the recording and writing process?

The process actually went really fast. At that time I was challenging myself to finish one song a month, and putting that fire under myself honestly made my writing stronger. The acoustic new version was recorded with Drew (the guitarist in the video) just in my apartment in one take. I added backgrounds later. It was really in the moment while creating and I tried not to process it too much.

How John Legend and Miguel have influenced your writing?

To me they represent a spectrum of appeal–I think John Legend appeals to women with heartwarming love and Miguel appeals to them with rockstar sex appeal.I really am trying to find a way to blend them together and come out like, rockstar love appeal. Whatever that may be!

How your time on The Sing-Off has influenced your career?

The Sing-Off really taught me how to perform with my all at the drop of a dime. When you are learning a new song and dance every week, you lose all your stage fright because there’s just no time for it!

What is it about the 90s that you find so fascinating?

It fascinates me for two reasons. One, I think so many of us feel like that was a simpler time and I like the idea of making something that makes people feel comfortable. Also, so much of the black programming from then still feels family friendly and I want my art to also feel like something you can watch with the whole family!

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

Yes–when I’m collaborating I am much less picky than with myself alone! I let them do whatever feels right to them. The point is that someone will contribute something that you wouldn’t have done or thought of yourself–otherwise what’s the point?

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

It definitely does mean that! It is coming along well and I think all of my fans will be surprised by it. Still family friendly but even more quirky, if that’s even possible.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Check for it in late August. No titles yet–that is part of the surprise. But I will say that it’s very 80s. Such a twist for me!

Any plans to hit the road?

Not the road however, my band is prepping to start doing some amazing shows in NYC very soon.

What else is happening next in Xav A.’s world?

Next in my world, I hope to be finding brands in NYC to collaborate with and perform for! I have my eye on a few but I have to see what happens.
