Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Miss You”?
A) It was the first song we wrote with producer John Cunningham. We met up soon after going independent and immediately clicked.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
A) We always draw on experiences from our relationship. In the first year of dating we were going through a rough patch and decided to take a break. We were both feeling sad and decided to get out of our apartments and ended up running into each other that night! We got back together and didn’t look back.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
A) Yes, we’re so excited, it comes out June 28th! The video is split-screen, showing us both going through our day apart. We ran around LA with our talented friends getting the shots, super guerilla-style. But we love how raw and honest the footage feels.
How was the recording and writing process?
A) We were very inspired when we wrote “Miss You” and we wrote it with John [Cunningham] in one session. We were at his home studio in Los Angeles. It started with the hook melody and verses, then we went up on the rooftop to watch the sunset and talk about the chorus. When it was dark, we came back down and finished the song. We recorded the instruments and vocals in Montreal. Sometimes songs take a long time and different versions, but the writing and production of “Miss You” was really effortless.
What role does Montreal play in your writing?
A) Fanny’s from Montreal, but we’re based in LA so we don’t get to write in Montreal that often. But there’s a really pure vibe there, people make music just for the love of it and it always feels like home. Every time we work there it’s a positive experience and we try to take that feeling back with us.
How have The Lumineers and Chainsmokers has influence your music?
A) We love the energy of EDM and think the synths and song structures are super emotional. But we’ve always been inspired by classic artists like Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac. We love to blend sounds and bring different influences to pop music.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
A) Yeah, more music is on the way. “Miss You” is the first single off our debut EP! Can’t wait to share all these songs ‘cause it’s our story. Every song tells an aspect of our life together. There are extreme highs and lows, but we never give up on each other.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
A) The EP will drop this Fall. We haven’t thought about the title yet. Adding it to our TO-DO list! Ha ha.
Any plans to hit the road?
A) Yes – once the EP is released. We love playing these songs live and it’s going to be amazing to perform them on tour!
What else is happening next in Jacob and Fanny’s world?
A) Right now we’re putting the finishing touches on the EP and preparing to shoot more videos. We’re always writing and making music. And of course, we also try to find time to do normal couple stuff like binge-watch Netflix and play with our 3 dogs. It’s important for us to stay grounded and connected to each other.
