Hi Johnny, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

-Hi! I’ve been doing great 🙂 I’ve been writing a lot and we got a puppy. Life is awesome!!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Gimme Gimme”?

-Absolutely! This one has been so fun for me. I felt like taking things to a little funkier place than some of my recent songs. I love writing a nice piano ballad, but sometimes I just wanna groove. I keep playing this one in my studio on the guitar and it’s just so fun for me!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

-You know, I originally had a concept about getting into a flow state and how wild it is when you just get in the zone. Then this gimme gimme thing kept coming out in parts of the chorus and it all just clicked. This one is all about being in that hyperfocus mode where you can’t think about anything but that person. Sometimes you just get the fever and can’t shake it!! I like the line “hypnotize me like a cobra, girl you’re charming” haha because that’s how I feel when my hot wife comes home from work.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

-I hope so!! Haven’t filmed it yet, but we’re working on it!!

How was the recording and writing process?

-Super fun!! I wrote this and made a whole demo a while back, but the chorus was totally different and didn’t feel quite right. When I started hearing the “gimme gimme” stuff, I sped it up and rerecorded the whole thing. I took all that to my good buddy Le Chev in Brooklyn and we recorded the rest in his studio. My favorite part about making music is that transition phase where you take your imagination and try to mold it into reality. I love getting to do that with my friends, and this one was a lot of fun.

After the success of your previous work – were you any nervous while working on new material?

-So nice of you to say!! Thank you! Actually, whenever I have something that seems to connect with an audience, I really just get so excited to give them more. I think seeing some of this traction in Asia and other parts of the world has been incredible and I am so pumped to be releasing something a little more upbeat and funky! I hope people will love this one and I’ll have more more more coming down the line after this 🙂

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

-I’m really learning about that now. I’ve just started exploring cowrites this last little while and I am learning so much. I do love writing a song by myself (like gimme gimme), but I really enjoy sharing that process with other writers too. It’s amazing to share stories and develop friendships with other songwriters and find out, “these people are laying awake at night thinking about prechoruses too! who knew!?”

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

-YES!! It’s coming along swimmingly. I’ve been in LA a bunch the last couple months and have some new ones cooking in the oven right now. I recently signed with AntiFragile music and they have been awesome helping me release these songs. More is on the way soon!!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

-Well, yes, sort of. I’ve had this structure in mind for a while to release three EPs, “Yesterday,” “Today,” and “Tomorrow.” The first two are a culmination of the songs I’ve done this past wave and my latest single “End of Time” marked the first song for the “Tomorrow” EP. To me, I just want to put out music as much as possible, but this has given me a great thematic element to write toward. It’s the timeline of my life. In my mind, the three EPs will add up to one full album “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.”

Any plans to hit the road?

-Yep! I’m working on things for this coming fall and am SO SO SO happy to be getting out there again. I’ve been writing so much lately and I’m ready to get out there and sing!!!

What else is happening next in Johnny Stimson’s world?

-I’m keeping busy! I’m working on getting my new live show all ready. I’ll be going to Indonesia for shows in September so we’re planning that trip and other tour stuff now. I’m still writing a lot this month and I’ll be in the studio in NYC for a while wrapping things up. I am really excited to share these new songs with the world!
