INTERVIEW: Dan Miraldi

Hi Dan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m doing great! Thanks for checking out the new song.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Woke Up Naked”?

It’s a song about returning to being single and putting yourself out there, letting go and having fun.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Well, without being overly specific, I went on a bit of a bender one evening and had a really great night.  When I got up the following morning and I had the line “I woke up naked in my apartment, but I think I had a pretty good time” come to me and I knew there was a song to write.

How was the recording and writing process?

Despite having that opening line, it took me a year to finish the song.  I’m one of those people who writes multiple songs at once.  I don’t force the creative process and I try not to overthink it. Sometimes you have to be patient and see how best to bring a song to life.

I did a demo of the song where I played everything and then I gave it to Dave Douglas, the producer and engineer.  Dave is also the drummer from Relient K, so I got him to play drums on it and brought in the brother duo of Ray and Russell Flanagan for lead guitar and keys.  I played bass and rhythm guitar.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?

Dave and I have worked together on a number of my albums, so we have a long history of working together well.  He’s great at enhancing my arrangements.

When bringing musicians into sessions, I used to be more of a control freak about how parts should go.  Now I choose a person because I already like how they play.  For example, with Ray’s guitar solo I wanted Ray to play like Ray and not try to impersonate someone else.  I’ll give guidance and say if I don’t like something, but generally I’ll trust a player to understand where I’m going musically and give the song the right feeling.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, I have an entire full-length album all ready to go.  This album was written in 2015 and 2016.  The songs are about that time of my life, specifically my time in New York City.  I recorded half of the album in 2016 with Dave Douglas, but I stopped to make the political EP, Love Under Fire, that I released last year.  I felt like I needed to make a statement and write protest music.  However, these NYC songs were really important to me and I didn’t want this collection of songs to be a “lost album.”  It’s my NYC party record and I didn’t want Donald Trump to be the reason I didn’t make this album.  So in February, I worked with my friend Kyle Downes at his studio in Washington, DC to finish the second half of the album.  I’m really pumped for people to hear this record.  I feel like people who are already fans of my music will be really pleased with it.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The album is called Alphabet City 2 AM.  It’ll be out before the end of summer.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, some East Coast and Midwest dates are in the works.  I’ll have the dates up on danmiraldi.com as soon as they’re confirmed.

What else is happening next in Dan Miraldi’s world?

My main focus is getting this album to as many people as possible right now, but there is more music to come.
