Thanks, it’s great to be here 🙂 I’ve been good thanks! Hope you have been too.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “My Sleeping Heart”?
‘My Sleeping Heart’ was released on Friday. It’s a song about someone who has spent a long time being unable to move on from a past relationship. The song reflects on how this has affected their life. The person is now determined to change the past.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I was out in Nashville in September and got chatting with a guy who was sat at a bar and looked like he needed someone to talk to. I sat next to him and he told me he was only just realising how much a lost love, earlier in his life, had affected him as a person and the life he had ended up living. He was only now coming to terms with it. I wrote the song as soon as I got back to the room.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
It was a brilliant experience. One of the most inspiring days of my life. Myself, Tom (features in the video) and the director and videographer, Matt Jeffrey, had planned 3 days of filming and in the end, got it done in 1 day. We had planned a whole story line that changed last minute as I wanted it to feel more in the moment and open. It ended up being just that, 3 creative people, in the moment, working together to capture something interesting, meaningful and beautiful.
How was the recording and writing process?
Sometimes a song comes as a whole, finished piece and sometimes it’s a battle. Thankfully, this one came pretty much fully formed! The verses and melody certainly did and that’s always an enjoyable experience. The recording was very enjoyable too. Myself, Thomas Dibb (guitarist/co-writer/producer), Mark Lewis (bass player/producer), who I worked with on my previous records, and Xavier Winton (drummer) got together to play over some new songs. It was meant to be just a fun session, no pressure. It was sounding so good we decided to record the tracks as soon as we could and My Sleeping Heart felt like it should be the first to be released. The rhythm and vocals were all laid down live…which is the way we all prefer to record.
What role does Rotherham play in your writing?
Great question! I have never spoken about this before but I have always had this strange experience where certain lines that I write or melodies that I sing come with imagery in my mind and a connection to a certain place from my child hood. I mean, the place might be a road I walked along on my way to school and there’s something about a feeling I had at that moment that must have some relevance to what I am writing but it isn’t an obvious relevance, even to me. Maybe a sound I heard, a subconscious thought or the wind or something! I am also hugely influenced by the music I heard around the house growing up too. My Dad is a huge Elvis fan and my mum listened to a lot of Soul and Motown.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, there is a lot more music to come. I don’t have release dates to announce yet but there’s a lot of music already recorded and almost ready to release.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No dates just yet but I have some titles. Stay Awake To Dream, which has a lot of relevance to Rotherham and me growing up in the area of Rotherham. It directly references specific things that I experienced.
Any plans to hit the road?
I am heading out on the road with my band in early July to celebrate the release of My Sleeping Heart. We play 3rd July at Night and Day Cafe, Manchester 4th July at The Lexington, London and 5th July at The Greystones, Sheffield. I would love to see some new and familiar faces at the shows. Tickets are available from Seetickets.com. Some more dates to be announced very soon!
What else is happening next in Lauren Housley’s world?
I am in the process of setting a studio up, which will mean I can get ideas down quicker. It’s going to be a beautiful songwriting space too. There will be more shows and music to announce in the very near future and f you’d like stay updated, you can check out my website laurenhousley.co.uk.
