Both metaphorically and creatively speaking,Die Cutembodies a reawakening for Cut Chemist. His first official album in nearly a decade, NPR said of the new album, “[Die Cut] isn’t meant to work at middle distance. This isn’t background music. It’s an album that rewards close attention, just to pick up on all of the minute details that Cut Chemist works into every given moment.” The record served as an emotionally-restorative outlet for legendary DJ as he processed the death of his father. The album also thrust him from the shadows of isolation and self-entrapment he encountered following a 30-day stint in jail after a DUI and a string of untimely loses. Desperately in need of companionship, Cut Chemist used Die Cut as a tool to surround himself with a network of live musicians, including Deantoni Parks (The Mars Volta), Biz Markie, actress Erika Christensen (Parenthood), tune-yards, Farmer Dave Scher, Dexter Story, simultaneously creating a community to surround him and reinventing his signature sample-based sound by creating an authentic-to-tape element that flawlessly balances both a new era for Cut Chemist and serves as a natural progression from his critically lulled debut The Audience’s Listening.

After entering the industry in 1987 as a founding member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, The Audience’s Listening established him as a cultural force. A tour with Shakira in Europe followed a sync in an Apple commercial and the viral sprawl of “What’s The Altitude.” Cut Chemist even made appearances in the Academy Award-nominated films Juno, Jennifer’s Body, and Up In The Air. 2009 saw him seize his place in the pantheon of Los Angeles legends by headlining the Hollywood Bowl alongside DJ Shadow. Adding legacy to his already legendary live reputation he launched the Sound of the Police tour and acclaimed Mix Set, where he abandoned the typical two turntable setup in favor of just a single deck, a mixer, loop pedal to do live samples from original vinyl pressings. Riding the momentum, he launched the Tunnel Vision tour, his own festival-style tour, where each act, including Edan, Paten Locke, Mr. Lif, Myka 9, and Deantoni participated in the other’s sets.
