‘Too Close To The Sun’ is like a splash of sunshine – uplifting and free – but born from a personal tragedy that hit the lead singer, Bjarke Niemann’s wife a few years back. As a reaction, Niemann started writing a series of spirited and cheerful songs.
“I wrote ’Too Close To The Sun’ at a time when I felt everyone around me were controlled by anxiety. That’s why it’s a song about love and about not letting fear get the best of you. We are all going die at some point anyway, so I’d rather leave this place as a worn out corpse that tried to make the most of it, than a as a prototype, that was never really put in action,” Niemann explains and continues: “I wrote this song for my wife shortly after her mother’s suicide. I wanted the song to encourage her.”
‘Too Close To The Sun’ is accompanied by a full length video recorded at a Copenhagen specialist school for children with Downs Syndrome. It was a young man, who inspired the songwriter for the concept, when Niemann, for some reason, found himself sitting on a bench in an emotional moment, feeling down. He recalls:
“From a distance, I saw a boy with Downs Syndrome walking in my direction, he was wearing a small back pack, a gold medal around his neck and he had a Coke in his hand. When he saw me, he instantly smiled and came up to me. He gave me a heartfelt hug and said: ‘You’re a really good guy’. The boy encouraged me as I intended to do with my song and I wanted to capture his warmth in a video. My mother used to be head of a school for children with Downs Syndrome where I played as a kid and growing up, those kids have always fascinated me with their purity, vulnerability, lust for life, intense melancholy and sheer happiness.”
The music of Lightwave Empire is breezy and uplifting – alternative pop songs focused on love and life. The debut single, ‘Pleasure And Pain’, received international praise from sites like Nowness.com and Noisey and secured the band their debut show at Denmark’s legendary Roskilde Festival. In the meantime singer and multi-instrumentalist, Bjarke Niemann, relocated to Los Angeles to finish the band’s upcoming debut album with producer David Sardy, who previously worked with Oasis, LDC Soundsystem and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
‘Too Close The Sun’ is released by Copenhagen Records World Wide. The debut album, ‘Heart Of Noise’ – produced by Dave Sardy (LCD Soundsystem, Oasis) in Los Angeles – is set for release on September 7th.
Lightwave Empire is managed by Mark Kates (MGMT, Doves) and represented by US publishing company Big Deal Music (Beach House, St. Vincent).
