Hi Bane, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks for having me.

It’s exciting times, as a lifelong dream came through with the release of my debut single. It’s a little unreal seeing my song on all these streaming services and stores, but it makes me immensely proud as well.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Less Than Enough”?

Less Than Enough is that song that is made to inspire the listeners to pursue those unforgettable moments that we sometimes forget about in the madness of everyday life. The moments that in reality makes life worth living.

I chose it to be the first song released (although not the first one produced), as it is a feel good song, has a catchy tune and really it’s made for singalong and doing live.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Yes, quite a funny one in fact! 🙂

I was with this girl at a restaurant one evening. It wasn’t a date or anything, just two people out having fun.

As the night progresses and it’s almost closing time, the owner of the restaurant and his wife joins us at the table – the girl I was with knew them both.

There are only a few other guests left in the restaurant at this time.

At one point, the maître’d walks towards our table with an envelope in his hand. He’s clearly trying to hide the envelope that obviously contains the tip of the day. He hands the envelope to the owner, and the way he does it, is very ‘mafia-style’, like a scene out of Godfather. The girl I was with and I looked at each other as ‘wow, there must be a lot of money in there’.

The owner takes the envelope with a baffled look on his face, and opens it right there sitting at the table. Turns it upside down and out falls $1,5!!

The whole situation is so comical that my friend and I start laughing one of those good hard laughs where you just can’t stop again.

We laughed so hard and so long, than my stomach was hurting.

It was in that moment, that I realized that my life had become stale and it needed to change.

I wanted ‘times of laughing my lungs out’ as the song goes…

I wrote the song as a call out to people to really go for those moments laughing, loving to a knockout, days of being on a roll and the courage and perseverance to go for it every day.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, not date set yet but I’m talking to some producers about making one. It’s about finding the right people to work with.

For now, there is a preproduction version on Youtube (Youtube/baneriff).

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing of Less Than Enough happened over the course of just a few hours. I did it one morning and just after noon, the lyrics and the music was all set and I had recorded it to take to my producer Martin Daus.

We were in the studio one day working on another song. We went to the kitchen to take a break and get some coffee and kind of just being in our own thoughts.

While making coffee I was humming the hook line of Less Than Enough and Martin looked at me, like a hungry lion looks at a prey and said “do that again!”. I did and he said “you really got something there”.

He was so excited that we stopped what we were doing and went straight to studio and did a first take of Less Than Enough.

What was it like to work with Martin Daus and how did that relationship develop?

I met Martin through his brother Jesper Daus, who’s a great piano player and did the piano on my next single.

I met with Martin and his wife in their home and after a cup of coffee being acquainted, he heard my music. At that time, in early 2017, I had written six or seven songs and they were recorded on my phone – just lyrics and no instruments but me singing them to the melody that I had made. So when I played the songs to him I was kind of both nervous and embarrassed, firstly because of the lacking music, and because this was a first…

He heard them, look at me and said “two things…” and I thought ‘oh no, now what’, really expecting the worst.

“You can sing, and that’s good” 🙂

“I love your music, we gotta produce this” and we got started.

Martin is an extremely talented musician and producer, and very patient, which works well when you are dealing with someone like me who at the time was a complete rookie, and because of this has a million questions.

We work really well together and have formed a friendship too.

How much did he get to influence the song?

He came up with the arrangement for the song based on the melody. So the tempo and the sound, mixing and mastering it to the end result. Fortunately, we agree on most things, so the whole thing goes quite smoothly.

What role does Denmark play in your writing?

The country itself doesn’t inspire anything in the songs, but I have a ‘cabin in the woods’ in Denmark that is very secluded. This is a great place for being creative and I wrote most of my songs there.

How Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi has influence your music?

First time I heard Bruce Springsteen were in a live version of ‘War’ and I instantly fell in love with the energy he exudes.

I remember him saying that when he first started out, he knew he didn’t have a great voice and couldn’t get by on his looks, so he had to write great songs and perform them well!

For me that resonated very well with my own philosophy – see the message, not the messenger!

Bon Jovi has many of the same qualities and that’s why I started listening to them. When I first hear ‘Living On A Prayer’ I was hooked.

Also, I learned early on that there seemed to be an overweight of girls at their shows which at that time was a great extra bonus! 🙂

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, the next single ‘Falling’ is coming out August 17 and two more singles coming this year and an album next year.

A lot of good stuff on the way, first stop is ‘Falling’, which is a love song that has the listener fall in love if not already! 🙂

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Falling coming out August 17.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, I am in talks with promoters, booking agencies and venues about touring. A lot is booked for the summer, so I expect that we will be hitting the road early fall.

What else is happening next in Bane Riff’s world?

I am busy in the studio getting the songs for the album ready for an expected release in the spring of 2019.

A blessed curse is, that a lot is going on in my life now besides releasing music. It isn’t always the positive kind, but it usually provides great material for songs. 🙂

As such, I just wrote another song, the first one since November, that takes the listener with me through what’s going on at the moment. It has a great feel to it and a song I’m proud of.

Whether it will be on the new album is yet unclear.

Thank you for taking the time to speak to me.

  1. I just started to listen to Riff Banes music! I can’t really put it down or turn it off! I am a new fan from the United States .
I really enjoyed his music because it’s so up beat it almost reminds me of the rock ‘n’ roll dance days of the 80s and I love dancing! Also, his voice is great and with his back up band I feel they’re going to be a hit in the US. Please keep me updated on any new music or information on being a soon as you get it in!
