INTERVIEW: Bakers Eddy
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi VENTS! Been alright, just burnt my toast though which im a bit bummed about but other than that everything is pretty cool.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Good Decisions”?
The song actually was never intended to make the E.P, Let alone be the title track. We were writing a shit ton of songs at the time, having a few drinks and messing about. We decided to try write a song with only 2 chords (A, C), call it Aye See and litter the words “Aye” and “See” throughout the verses. It remained that way until we took the song to studio and Jon said it was shit and needed a facelift.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Plenty of drinking events. We could make a never ending list of rank decisions that inspired the song. Buying Muscat instead of Vegetables. Smoking a dart through my asshole (Alex). Running head first into a road sign (Alex). Running head first into the glass door in Footscray (Ciarann).
Running head first into the ground and smashing the un-opened bottle of vodka on my chin (Ian).
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yeh bro, real soon. As soon as they tell us it’s out we will let you know.
The single comes off your new EP I’m Not Making Good Decisions – what’s the story behind the title?
Well, glad you asked. The decisions we were making at the time weren’t good.
How was the recording and writing process?
We approached writing for this E.P differently to what we had done in the past. We set ourselves a target of 50 songs in 50 days. And we had rules within the songs to give us some direction like, each song needed 4 parts and 4 vocal melodies. It freed us up from overthinking too much about what we were creating, just needed parts. There were a whole lot of shit songs, a bit of Reggae, some educational anthems, Latin Disco. But out of all that came some golden nuggets. So we took the best to studio and hoped Jon would be into it.
What role does Melbourne play in your writing?
We were very fresh to Melbourne at the time we were writing these songs so everything was new and exciting. We were having a lot of fun and I think that excitement found its way into the tracks.
What decisions did you get to explore and take on this record?
Everything was recorded live, pretty much plug in and go. Jon handed us some rank fuzz pedals and put a trash mic on the kit. It all amounted to a pretty raw and racous sound. He also got Ciarann naked in the vocal booth at one point. I think that was the key ingredient.
Any plans to hit the road?
Just returned from Europe. Next up we head to New Zealand for a couple of dates which will be sick. We’ve got plans to rodie up and down Australia for the next few months too.
What else is happening next in Bakers Eddy world?
We actually speant the day today recording a bunch of demos, so we are still cooking. Other then that we riding this Good Decisions wave all the way whilst continuing to make bad decisions and running head first into the great wide open.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “You?” My latest single “YOU” …
