INTERVIEW: Dossey

Hi Dossey, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Busy! But, great! Thanks for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your upcoming single “Heartbeats”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The line, “You never were just ordinary” is a reference back to a story of an elderly couple that is reflecting on their relationship after being together for years and years. It displays the kind of love that we all hope to find for ourselves – something that never gets boring, or “ordinary”.  A love that is not only comfortable but energizing.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! I’ll give you a hint in 3 words: Judi Sheppard Missett

How was the recording and writing process?

I worked on this thing for a long time! I wrote the song with a couple other songwriter buddies of mine, Adam Palmer and Lainey Wright, in Nashville back in January of 2017. After a long spring tour and the release of my EP, Electric, I came back to Austin itching to record it. So, in June that same year, my producer Taylor Webb and I got the first demo down.

Taylor and I have been working on it (and some others!?) since then, focusing mostly on what the Dossey sound should be. I honestly don’t even remember how many versions of this song we did, but we just knew we could make it better and better each time. We were so set on making sure the music not only matched the sentiment of the song, but that it even lifted it more, and I think it was worth the time and work we put in to make sure that happened.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with band members rather than as a solo artist? What role does Austin play in your music?

I’m going to answer these two questions together, because they are very connected in my brain.

Making music in Austin means a lot of things, but for me, for now, it means collaborating with as many other artists as possible. We have such an unusual and amazing resource here – that there are so many musicians making their own art, and so many real fans of music here that come out to shows and respond in real time!  You can really easily dive deep into exploring new sounds in both a live and a recording setting.

Above all, I am a songwriter – I will work and work and work a song, exploring every little nook, cranny, possibility it can have, before I ever take it into a studio. It is so important to me to write things that are meaningful and impactful even without all the bells and whistles. It’s exciting to see how a producer and I can work together to translate a song from its most raw form into something new and bigger. I’ve enjoyed seeing how other musicians here in town have interacted with the songs, and what we’re able to make together.

My recent affinity with 80s pop music, for example,  is very much influenced by my friends also making music here. So, get ready to hear a lot more Whitney from me. 🙂

Does this song mean we can expect an EP or album?

I’m not sure. I would 100% love to be able to make a full record some day, but I’m still figuring out who I am as an artist, and who my “people” are too. At the moment, I’m focusing on singles, and collaborating as much as I possibly can.

Any tentative release date or title?

I’ll definitely  be releasing a second single later this year!

Any plans to hit the road?

A bit! I’m mostly focusing on local dates and finishing some more tracks at the moment, but am starting to nail down some one-offs to New Orleans, LA, NYC, Nashville, and a few others, this summer and fall!

What else is happening next in Dossey’s world?

I’ve got a lot of dreams coming down the pipeline at the moment – From releasing more singles, alternate versions, and remixes over the next few months, collaborating with some other stinking great artists, and making music videos, I’m staying pretty busy. The Heartbeats track seems to be the flood gate, which I love. I’m working hard, y’all!
