China’s most distinctive new hip-hop artist, Lexie, releases her latest single and video, “Like A Mercedes,” via 88rising. Watch it here. Directed by Yuen Hsieh, the cyberpunk-inspired video is a mind-bending simulation that transforms a couple’s nostalgic night out into a futuristic game.
Born and raised in Changsha, China, 19-year-old Lexie is creating a new template for hip-pop stardom. Although she grew up in an entirely Chinese environment, Lexie’s provocative English lyrics and her awareness of youth culture have set her apart from her contemporaries. After earning early recognition as a finalist on popular Korean television show, “K-pop Star 5,” Lexie passed on a record deal with one of Korea’s largest entertainment companies in order to focus on her career independently in China. Her first release was a cover of Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” which she rearranged to include her own rap verse. This fusion of pop and hip-hop was entirely unique and the cover went viral, earning over 9 million views online. She further proved herself as one of China’s most dynamic hip-hop artists with the release of her first original single, “Coco Made Me Do It,” in January of 2017. The track found similar success, earning over 5 millions views online. This promising trajectory along with Lexie’s distinct appearance caught the attention of the fashion industry where she landed placements in Puma’s Suede 50 campaign and Levi’s New Years TVC campaign.
