INTERVIEW: Forts Like Vana

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

What’s up VENTS! Thanks for talking with us. We are doing just fine and dandy.

Can you talk to us more about your debut single “Love You Right”?

For sure! What do you wanna know?

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Logan: I was living in a crappy apartment when I first moved to Nashville. I didn’t know anyone and all I had was a bag of clothes and guitars to my name. One night I was walking around in circles talking to myself to stay entertained and I started humming random melodies and outta nowhere “let me love you right” came out of my mouth. I ran and grabbed my guitar and notebook and wrote the song and sent it to Derek to see what he thought. Right when he heard it he said “Yeah we gotta do something with this” and a few weeks later we went in and recorded it.

The song is about being wild on a night out on the town. And instead of taking things slow with someone you just cut to the chase and make some adventures with them.

How was the filming process and experience behind the music video?

What we think what makes a video cool is seeing it in its most raw form. So because of that we had our friend shoot the video of us playing the tune in Diego’s basement with our gear and some lights around it. Then the editor added those sporadic line designs and we thought it was just too visually appealing to not add in there.

The single comes off your EP This + This = That – what’s the story behind the title?

We’re a band that doesn’t like to think too far into meanings when it comes to names. Names don’t define us – we define the names. There are too many new artists out there trying to be intricate with their names and we just wanted to keep it simple and to the point. So it means songs + songs = ep haha.

How was the recording and writing process?

We keep our writing process as natural and organic as possible. We never overthink a song so if it ever seems forced we walk away from it and scrap the stuff. For these songs we have on the EP, we wrote each song in less than a day and then recorded it the next day. So it was a pretty fast process.

What role does Nashville play in your songwriting?

It places a really laid back role for us. Nashville is songwriter haven, so lyrics mean everything here. We love telling stories that come from our hearts and the city just brings that out of us.

With the success of your first single – did that put any pressure as you were working on the EP or rather the opposite?

Actually the opposite. We were nervous putting out the single because we never heard anything really sound like that song, so we didn’t know what people were going to think of it. When we started to see that people found the tune and liked it, we started getting really excited to throw our other tunes out there.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

To put it simply, one of those blurry nights in Nashville haha.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’re hitting the road between July 7th-13th for a small midwest tour. We’ve only been a band since January so we’re really excited and humbled to be hitting the road this rapidly in our band’s career. We can’t wait to see and meet the Fortress Family this summer.

What else is happening next in Forts Like Vana’s world?

We have some pretty cool shows booked for July and August that’ll be announced soon, then we are going to be dropping some new videos this fall too. Lots of shows are getting booked and our main goal right now is to be playing in every city that our fans are in. The fam means everything to us so we need to come see them.
