Plested Releases “Back Up Plan”

Twenty-five year old singer/songwriter Plested started his musical career as one half of acclaimed duo Chasing Grace, but it would take a year before he realised that he just wanted to write songs. Once he had chosen this direction, however, in the space of over a year he would become one of the most sought-after writers in the business – penning for the likes of Zayn Malik to Little Mix to Naughty Boy and Ray BLK.

But he missed an artist; now following a stream of quiet releases this year, including ‘Habits’ that picked up huge support across Apple Music and Spotify, he now offers up a new gem in ‘Back Up Plan’ – and firmly establishes just why he’s in such echelons. His softly-burnished vocal against a stripped-back guitar instrumental that builds and crescendos to a gorgeously melodic hook easily stakes its claim against some of the best indie singer/songwriters of the moment. Recalling the natural talent and poise of the likes of Shawn Mendes and Charlie Puth, this is thoughtful, superlative craftsmanship that should see Plested shining deservedly in his own right. With a debut solo album on the horizon and a headline show on 25 July at Kings Cross Old Church, the emerging star has attracted around him some of the biggest producers and songwriters in the game: Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde), Eg White (Adele, Sam Smith) and Emily Warren (Dua Lipa, Chainsmokers) to name just a few.

Speaking on the track, Plested states: “I wrote ‘Backup Plan’ on a trip to LA, I was feeling pretty homesick at the time. I met up with Alex Hope – an incredible writer and unfortunately one of the only female producers I’ve been working with – who helped me come to terms with being so far away from home. We spoke about what it takes to be in music, how much time away from family and friends you have to sacrifice, not knowing if or when you were going to get paid next. I guess when you love something it’s all the same; you’d do absolutely anything to make it work. All or nothing. No backup plan.”
