Hi VENTS! Nice to meet you. We’ve been very well thank you. We’ve just finished our Australia and UK tour, and finally released the video for ‘Feel’, so we’re very happy boys at the moment!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Feel”?
Feel was a song that came together really naturally. Christian had the basic ideas for the structure and chords but when we all came together to collaborate on it, everyone stepped in and gave the song their own little twist. For me it’s one of our most exciting new songs because of that full collaborative aspect.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
There were definitely a few things. The song talks about the inability to feel anything due to the constant judgement I was putting on myself and I felt from some others in my life, leading to this numb state of mind.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
The filming process was great. We sat down with Taylor and Jake a few months back and told them the meaning/message behind the song, and then just basically let them come up with the concept and look of the video. We like to be quite hands off when it comes to videos, as we only work with directors that we really trust. We feel that if they have someone breathing down their neck during the whole process, and trying to get them to follow a strict plan, then the video will probably suffer quite immensely. By giving the director free reign, I think it puts them in a better place creatively, and therefore the video comes out the best it can possibly be.
How was the recording and writing process?
Like I mentioned above, Christian came up with the bones of the song, and then we all came together and fleshed it out. We wrote a bunch of songs in Melbourne, mid last year, and this was one of them. We recorded the track at Red Bull Studios in Auckland, with ol’ mate Ben Lawson. Ben is an absolute wizard behind the desk, and we couldn’t be any happier with how the track came out.
What role does Auckland play in your writing?
Maybe the fact that Christian and James don’t live in New Zealand anymore played into how the song turned out. It was written in a very spur of the moment blast as we only had a limited time to write all together, we have been trying to keep that same feeling we got when we first played it alive.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Ha, yes! We have a bunch of new tracks in the bank that we’re sitting on. Very excited to share more!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No solid date yet, and yes there is a title but you’ll have to wait for that!
Any plans to hit the road?
We’ll definitely be doing some more Aus and NZ shows, and hopefully another trip over to the UK and Europe before the end of the year.
What else is happening next in Yukon Era’s world?
More music, more shows, more videos, and maybe we’ll grow some more chest hair. Apart from James, he’s got plenty of chest hair.
