INTERVIEW: EJ

Hi EJ, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi there!  I’ve been great thanks!  Just got back from an incredible w/e in Zurich with Formula E!  Formula E is the electric street racing series that I perform at, and this was our first race in Zurich.  What a city and amazing crowd!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Slipstream”?

Sure thing!  Slipstream is my first release with Garuda which I am super excited about and it is out on 15th June 2018.  The guys at Garuda have been amazing so thanks to Gareth, Ash and Steven for all the support!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Not an event but a couple of things I wanted to achieve.  One, I wanted an absolute summer banger that will hopefully get played at festivals and clubs across the world.  And two, I wanted a track that fitted in to what I play at Formula E and really suited the drivers crossing the finish line.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There is indeed.  Not sure when it will be finished yet though.

How was the recording and writing process?

I feel I have definitely created a sound in my sets and wanted to make sure Slipstream kept to the bigger, more full on records I play.  At the same time of being pretty banging I still wanted to keep something very melodic and uplifting.  The main drop was worked on first but I still wanted something extra to give it that lift, which is where the piano at the start of the breakdown and then further in after the drop was added.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with or remixing someone else rather than in your own?

Yeah sure!  The benefits of collaborating or remixing is you have someone else’s creative genius to bounce off, and it is always inspiring to work with like-minded people.

Having found success – as you release any new material, do you feel any pressure or rather the opposite?

I just get on with it really.  Yes, you want the next track to be bigger than the last, but no need to feel the pressure.  I just try and make sure I am really happy with what I am putting out there so you can’t say “ah, wish I had done that!”

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

It does indeed.  We have about 6 tracks on the go at the moment with Garuda, all pretty much finished.  We are planning something really exciting for the start of next year also so can’t wait to see how that develops.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

So Slipstream is out on 15th June and then the next release will probably be end of July.  A few names in the pipeline but haven’t decided yet.

Any plans to hit the road?

Well the Formula E season is coming to an end in NYC on 14th and 15th July so I am over to play at that, then at Ministry of Sound on 3rd August for a Garuda party.  There are other dates being discussed at the moment so keep an eye on my website ejmusic.com for more info.

What else is happening next in EJ’s world?

Well aside from all the music we are working on, I’ve been having some exciting meetings about a merchandise range and the ideas the company have shown me are really cool.  Watch this space!
