INTERVIEW: Rich Hennessy

Hi Rich, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello- thank you for having me! I’ve been extremely busy!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Seen Your Ghost”?

“Seen Your Ghost” was written right after moving to NYC from New Jersey. I jumped into the dating scene on all of the dating apps, I was going out on dates and out to bars etc. and instantly became familiar with the phenomenon of “ghosting” where people just cut off all communication with you without any notice or reasoning. You could have gone on a date, a one night stand that you wanted to pursue further or even dating someone for awhile and they all just vanish. But then it also ventures into the aftermath of ghosting. How you’re almost haunted by these people. You see them in the streets but they’re not there. You have a dream about them and you’re kissing them but they turn to mist. Seeing them on social media in friend’s posts. Things that mess with your mind because even though we push through and carry on, it effects us.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

There is one particular event that pushed me to finally write the song but that event was not the reason as to why I wrote the song. My life is a joke.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There is a video out now, you can find on YouTube and Facebook!

How was the recording and writing process?

Both of these processes were similar, how to write and produce a song that you could literally imagine happening. You can see ghosts, see the imagery in the lyrics and in the production. My motto is that want to write songs that move people but I want to produce songs that make people move! I worked with a number of friends to make this track happen. The track was produced by Corey Phillips who just got what I was looking for and took my direction and feedback incredibly. I’m really proud of this track.

How has Adele influenced your writing?

Adele is able to capture what she is trying to say in many colorful ways. Her approach is simple, she writes based off of how she’s feeling or what she’s going through in a moment in time. I’ve learned from her that you just have to be completely authentic in your writing and bear your soul to make magic.

What role does NYC play in your music?

I’m writing my NYC story in the way I’ve experienced it thus far. NYC is one of a kind but I feel like all of the people in this city share these stories and talk about them over brunch every Sunday. So I take the time to evaluate all of the experiences I have in this great city and try to put those into lyrics that anyone in any city could relate to.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes- you absolutely can. I’m currently in production of my next single aiming for this Summer!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Shooting for Summer. The track is called “Dodged A Bullet” See what I did there?

Any plans to hit the road?

That’s absolutely in the plans for the next few months- I’d like to release this next single and then I think I’m ready to take this show on the road. For now, I’ll be gigging around NYC testing out all of the new material I’m working on.

What else is happening next in Rich Hennessy’s world?

I’ve had a very busy 2 months- I was apart of Usher’s Megastar Competition. It’s the world’s first app-based talent competition where performers compete from around the world at the opportunity to win a cash prize. I was the March Spotlight Winner and won $10,000 to put towards my career. And just last week, I put together an Adele Tribute Concert at The Cutting Room in NYC with my co-producer Peter Dunn, that featured special guests along side of me paying homage to the superstar.
