INTERVIEW: Mike Ra

How would you classify your music?

The music I make changes depending on my mood… sometimes it’s Rap/Hip-Hop, sometimes it’s Rnb/Soul- but sometimes it becomes something else entirely. I think the most important thing to do as a musician is to explore uncharted territory.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

2 Pac, Kanye West, Nas, Bob Marley and Jay Z. (Honourable mentions: Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Pink Floyd, and Guns n Roses. I really like trendsetters).

What do you want fans to take from your music?

Something positive… I don’t want to be an artist that is pushing negative energy into the world. I think one of the main purposes of music is to help people out of difficult times. All of my favourite artists were able to do that for me, so I would like to return the favour whenever possible.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

The Toronto music scene is vibrant and full of energy right now. I know a lot of really talented people.

What is the best concert you have been to?

Yeezus.

What do you like most about playing live?

I love seeing the crowd’s reaction to my music. That type of natural energy is impossible to duplicate.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favourite, and why?

It’s not from a CD, but it’s a record called “Faded”. I made that instrumental back in 2016… There were a lot of things going on in my personal life at the time and I decided to put all of that negative energy into the composition. It is one of those instrumentals that tells a story without words. I didn’t write the actual song until a year later and, truth be told, I wanted to hear Travis Scott on it.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

I’ve become a much better songwriter- I’ve learned how to accurately express my thoughts with fewer words. I think I’ve also become more mature, not only as a musician but as an individual. My energy has calmed a lot as well.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

2 Pac… or Kanye West.

What’s next for you?

Once we finish the Balance Ep release, I’m going to start working on my next project. I have a few ideas about where I want my sound to go so I am going to dive back into producing.
