Mike – Yeah good thanks. Things have been going totally crazy after the debut single came out and Alli Hagendorf (Head of Rock – Spotify) placed the song at the number 1 spot on the New Noise playlist on Spotify the day it came out!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “On Your Own”?
Danny – Yeah, it came together quite quickly really. I’d had the song knocking round for a while and so I already had the structure. We just got in the studio and kept working at it and knocking it into shape and we’re really happy with the results and how it’s been received. It’s just a no nonsense 3 minute rock’n’roll song that doesn’t stop all the way through.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Danny – Yeah, it’s just about having a not so great lifestyle, enjoying it while you’re experiencing the highs but then not being able to outrun it or escape it when you’ve had enough. We’ve all been there at some point, I think that’s why people can relate.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Mike – Really good. We filmed the video at a really cool local brewery called Northern Monk in Leeds, UK. Our label and management looked around a lot of places before deciding on that location. Then we shot it in one day and the label have got a great team that edited it and produced it. We were over the moon when it got premiered on Alternative Press in the US.
How was the recording and writing process?
Danny – I have my own studio so I write all the time, then Mike just comes in and tracks his drums. As we can leave our stuff setup at our HQ all the time, we can have everything mic’d up, so if we have a spark, we can hit record and get it down. It’s a very organic process. We are a two piece rock’n’roll band, the trick is to not over complicate any part of that process but keep the music relevant and cool. We want to emulate our heroes like Zeppelin and Sabbath etc but we need to do it in a way that is accessible for todays audience.
What role does the UK play in your music?
Mike – UK Music from the 50/60/70s plays a huge role in our music as that’s what influences the most, along with black American music coming out of the south in the 1920’s right up until the 1970’s. People like Led Zeppelin and The Stones from the UK to people like Howlin’ Wolf and Son House. We try to take those influences and put modern recording and production techniques onto them. You don’t want to mess with the best, but we don’t see anything wrong with borrowing from them and putting your own spin on it! Rock’n’roll has sold for years and hopefully will be around for a long time yet, but it’s up to us and others bands breaking through to keep carrying the torch.
How do you feel about the reception for the song? Does that put any pressure or rather motivate you?
Danny – The song has and is still receiving totally amazing reviews and is causing a real stir and it’s all a little surreal. The thing you want to actually happen when you release music is actually happening. We are so happy. Some people would perhaps be intimidated but for us it just proves to us that what we are doing is what the fans want. We are taking the great energy from this release and carrying it forward into the next, and hopefully we’ll keep that formula going for as long as we can. We enjoy the pressure, it’s great fuel for songwriting and playing and just doing the best job you can.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Danny – Absolutely, our next single will be out July 12th with a third in September and our first album in October!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Mike – July 12th for the next single and you’ll have to wait to find out. We are very excited about it though!
Any plans to hit the road?
Danny – Yes! People are rushing around now behind the scenes trying to line some dates up for us this year and we’ll be touring and hitting the UK/EU festival circuit in 2019, but at this rate who knows what’s going to happen!
What else is happening next in No Fit State’s world?
Danny – It’s a whirlwind at the minute, things are happening so fast. We are just keeping our heads down, trying to write the best music we can and just holding on for the ride. We’ve got singles coming out, an album, more music videos, press, radio, live dates and that’s only 2018. Who knows what the rest of this year will throw at us. As for 2019, we can’t wait!
