Fans of Bat For Lashes and Lykke Li pay attention to new alt-pop artist LARKS. Singer-songwriter Fiona O’Kane (LARKS) has taken her personal diary and tied it together with guileless vocals, unnerving melodies and dreamy guitar lines to create a brand of dark pop that is captivating and not far from the aforementioned legends of alternative songwriting. Finding home in the tension between rouge, indie guitars against soaring vocals, sparkling synths and pop hooks, LARKS wet our appetite last year with a teaser live session of her song ‘Tired Eyes’ (which commanded attention from likes of Daniel P Carter on BBC Radio One and Killing Moon) and now LARKS has released her much anticipated debut single ‘Holiday.’ Watch here
As a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Fiona has been cutting her teeth writing for kids TV shows, fronting indie band Runaway Go and performing covers online (including a cover of ‘I Can’t Help Myself’ which appeared in a Durex advert) and all this experience has fuelled a desire to create a unique sound as alter ego LARKS. “I was becoming frustrated, I wanted to expand and push my songwriting for quite some time and I realised that I needed to make some changes in my approach to music in order to figure out my identity as an artist.” The change that birthed ‘Holiday’ was a literal holiday – renting out a house by the sea with three friends and no wi-fi, she found that style she was looking for among the late nights and wine. “because we had no wifi we couldn’t listen to any other artists – it was a little bubble.” The result is a mesmerising and tantalising debut single that will make you fall in love with LARKS in a big way. You’ll need to get in line though because we’re all swooning!
