On this Friday, we are teaming up with the fabulous singer-songwriter NILKA for the premiere of her vibrant and striking (pun intended) new single “Strike.”
Florida-native artist, Nilka, is transcending the alternative-pop genre with her fluid vocals and cinematic music. Nilka fell in love with creating songs as a young girl fusing her thoughts to a string of notes with lyrics originating back to the age of 9. Five years later she taught herself how to play guitar, cementing her melody-lyric combination and her pensive songs became like entries in a journal. Songwriting was a way for Nilka to confront experiences in her life and music became her outlet. Throughout grade school, she participated in different bands and choirs where she became fascinated with the impression symphonic music could leave on an audience and inspired by a broad spectrum of genres from Motown to Folk music. During the summer of 2014, Nilka relocated to Nashville, Tennessee where she continues composing songs that narrate life encounters aspiring to connect with listeners through her music.
Recently Nilka released an EP which has been titled “Year of the Escape” and defined by Victoria Henderson, of Music Update Central and Nashville Unsigned, as “a self-meditating journey that makes you feel as if you’re a part of something bigger than yourself.” Nilka strives to captivate her listeners with a soul-moving experience and provide an escape from the mundane outlook on life, compelled to reveal a unique and authentic perspective of this world.
Hi Nilka, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thank you! I’ve been great. Very busy writing and preparing for new releases.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Strike”?
Yes! Strike was co-written/produced with Mick Utley and is about reminding listeners how fierce and powerful they can be. Even when we think struggles in life are going to take us down, we are actually bigger than our struggles and when we snap back into that mindset we become unstoppable.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Maybe not a single event in particular, but last summer I was beginning to feel a little burnt out and sometimes no matter how motivated we are to chase our dreams, it’s easy to get caught in the web of fears and doubts. The idea for this song came to me when I felt like my Heart was trying to remind me that the highs and lows are normal and when times get low prepare for the sharp bounce back because it’s always stronger than it was before.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, I will be releasing a lyric video on YouTube for this single created by WSKProductions.
How was the recording and writing process?
I met with my friend Mick Utley, a producer/writer in Nashville and brought him bits of Strike as an idea. He loved it and it all came together pretty quickly. Together we made the song what it is today!
What role does Nashville play in your music?
I love Nashville! The music community is like no other and I’m continuously meeting people that are very supportive and talented. The industry here has motivated and inspired me to write better and be the best that I can be. Nashville has been a strong influence in the way I write and the artist I’ve become.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
I’m blown away by the talent in this town so any chance I get to collaborate I definitely take a step back from my usual approach of creating so the music gets to come alive in a different way than it would if I were creating on my own. I love collaborating because the creativity bounces off of one another sculpting into an art piece of perfection.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
There is no EP or LP in the works right now, but Strike is the first of a new wave of material I will be releasing soon. It’s coming along better than I imagined which is always exciting!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I don’t want to give away all my secrets but July and August are in for some heat! 😉
Any plans to hit the road?
No plans to hit the road this year as I’m focusing on releasing quality music and content but I’m crossing my fingers (and scheming) for next year.
What else is happening next in NILKA’s world?
Well, Strike is actually the kickoff into what I like to call Nilka’s Summer Heatwave! I will be releasing 2 more singles this summer and I have a couple more surprises up my sleeve. I am so eager about what’s coming with this new music and I can’t wait to share it with the world!
