Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Shades of You”?
Yeah, Shades of You is song we’ve had for a while. We didn’t initially intend it to be a single but the song kept getting such an amazing response when we played it live. So we made a few tweaks and decided to release it. It’s always been collectively one of our favorites that we’ve written.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
From a lyrically point of view I can’t really say any single event inspired the words. It’s more just the manifestation of a series of events in a relationship. It’s the way you look at someone, and what’s goes through your head.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yeah the video has been shot actually, that should be coming VERY soon hopefully.
How was the recording and writing process?
Pretty smooth as usual with us. We’re all very independent when it comes to writing and recording. We all have set ups at home where we work on individual parts. That’s not to say we don’t enjoy writing together though, it was just circumstances. We’ve actually just got our own studio space in the last month or so, so have started writing a lot more in the room all together like a proper big boy band.
Known for playing with different styles – how do you tend to balance them all together?
There’s no real thought process to that, other than avoiding the obvious extremes of our tastes that wouldn’t really work in our music.
We’re all pretty well used to working with each other and we understand each others tastes and nuances so we’re generally all on a pretty similar vibe when it comes to writing and blending styles and tastes.
Does the new single mean we can expect new music?
Absolutely, we have a load of new material written and have probably chosen our next single already. We’re always working on new songs though.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes definitely. We’ve just started working with the agents Primary Talent so hoping to get out live a lot more over summer and the rest of the year.
Our latest single has been getting a lot of play over in Europe (Germany and Scandinavia) so we’re hoping to head across the Channel for some shows.
What else is happening next in XY&O’s world?
We have the final date of a residency we’ve been playing in Cardiff, that’s on June 1st. It’s the final show of four gigs we’ve played there over spring. The support and turn out has been amazing so we’re keen to make the last one really special. You should come.
